At this point, a combined 30% of respondents have a net worth equal to at least 20 years' savings. I congratulate (and am envious of) you; that's a real achievement. Also, the fact that such a high percentage of people have such a solid safety net is encouraging.

Meanwhile, a suggestion for RetireJapan: Why not lock this thread at some point, then ask the same question periodically? Perhaps every year, or every second year?

It would be great if this poll could be coupled with age bracket data as well. People who are closer to retirement and have had long careers are likely to have much higher savings and net worth level and would be great to see how the this level normalizes with age.

I'm very pleasantly surprised. Of course, active members of this forum are likely to be far ahead of 'normal' people.

I would venture that if we asked the population at large most people would be in the 0-5 years of spending bracket.

On reflection, perhaps "solid" wasn't the best adjective to describe a safety net.

Good question, though with a bunch of caveats. Spending right at the moment is high with two kids in uni, but on the other hand, no international travel has helped to even things out a bit.

5 years ago, I'd say we spent about 4 million a year, so getting 10+ years of spending is not really that tough, especially for the over 40 crowd. Those of you in your 20s and 30s need not panic, yet. At age 30 I had a net worth of 2 year's spending.

I also need to decide how many options to include on my future Macan or NX450h .


I just did my semi-annual household financial review. Up 10% over last year overall.


One question I am asking myself is whether I should minus my future capital gains taxes. Do you include them?

Regular distributions and dividends are one thing, but since I rarely sell anything some holdings are 20 years old and have grown as much as 1000%.

A fund/stock that has unrealized gains of $100,000 probably should be considered to be worth $80,000, but my guess is few people think that through.

That is pretty impressive, and perhaps rare in Japan.

We rented for a while and the unit had gone from 25m new to 35m (bubble). I actually offered 15m (when it was 10 years old) to the owner and was shot down. Now they go for 10m.

On the other hand, a friend bought a 25 year old house near the beach and station. It is now 40 years old and still worth what he originally paid for it (60m as it is on a 70tsubo plot of land).

We're up around 40% in the last year (growth, exchange rate change, and contributions).
