cooking with oven/microwave etc..

Post by bryanc »

inspired by bens monday read- i would like to ask about what people use for doing christmas dinner...this is something that i have wondered about for many yrs!
i understand that it is poss in a microwave oven combo but it seems to take an awfully long time..
any way around this?(i see also that ben has a number of appliances)

other question is that i am thinking of buying an air fryer, but wondering what this actually does that a microwave oven combo one doesnt do?

a belated merry christmas to all!!

Ha, ha, I do the turkey and most of the cooking in a big electric Sharp oven/microwave combo. It works very well and we've been using it for well over a decade.

The countertop gas convection oven very nice indeed but too small for a 12 lb turkey sadly (https://rinnai.jp/products/kitchen/buil ... ombo_point)

I have a Sharp microwave/oven combo (these types make a ton of sense considering space constraints in Japanese apartments) and a Ninja Air Fryer. I have to say, getting the air fryer basically cut back on my oven usage by 90%. Pretty much anything outside of baking sweets and stuff (and even then) could be done on an air fryer instead of an oven. A turkey would be impossible but I've roasted chickens in mine with no issue.

Air fryers are also better for heating leftovers. The only downside I see is space constraints since you'd want a microwave no matter what but maybe you can find a microwave/oven/fryer combo. I've seen those out there.

A few years ago I was doing low-carb recipes and decided I needed an American style convection oven for the low-carb pizzas. After doing a lot of research I settled on the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro: https://www.amazon.com/Breville-BOV900B ... B01N5UPTZS

This oven has surpassed all of my expectations! It works exactly like a conventional oven back home and can handle a lot of food. It's very easy to cook a turkey in it from Costco or from one of the US military bases (where the turkeys are somehow bigger, better, and cheaper than Costco). I've also baked cakes, pizzas, and casseroles in it. For Americans who find Fahrenheit more intuitive, you can switch from Celsius to Fahrenheit with the touch of a button. Here is a video using the Breville to cook a 14lb turkey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1p2urY-ipU

When I bought it in 2018 it cost about $400 plus $100 for shipping. Seems like the latest models are cheaper than that but there are so many to choose from I'm not sure which model is equivalent.

I cook ours on a slightly lower heat (180/190) for about four hours, but I think you can go hotter/quicker.

The microwave/oven combo functions exactly like how a normal oven works. When I look up recipes I check for corresponding ones for normal ovens. A roast chicken cooks for 55 minutes at 200C/390F for example. As for electricity, its not that bad. Your airconditioner definitely uses up more electricity.

This has become an Xmas tradition in the Lemmings household. Easily fits in our Japanese-sized oven.

How do the oven/microwave combos work as a microwave? I notice most of them don't have a turntable, so if you're just wanting to quickly chin something does it cover evenly or heat in patches?

Thinking of getting an oven but don't want the microwave to be an afterthought, and don't have space for both!
