Monex account question

Post by RetireJapan »

I'm trying to help someone with their Monex account and ran into something I don't really understand.

What is the difference between the 'foreign stock buying account' and the 'general broker account' as seen in the picture below?

I'm not familiar with Monex, but it appears you have to use the foreign account to buy US/Chinese stocks. So I'm guessing the general account only works for Japanese stocks?

1. There are many Japanese investors who keep USD or other foreign currency in their general accounts. Perhaps they purchases the USD through the Monex Forex interface, or it was in a US money market fund, or transfer the money in USD etc.

2. If you want to buy US equities, you need to send it over to the foreign investing account.

3. For NYSE/NASDAQ purchases Monex uses the Tradestation interface. Which is very good and available in English on the web or app.

Thanks! Got very confused there as Rakuten just has the one general account (I only use Monex for mutual funds myself).

NP! For #3 the Android app is in English, and you can log in to the TradeStation website directly once you get your login from Monex to access the English version. It is an international product after all.

If you use their link/portal it will be all in yeh olde nihongo.

I also use Monex mostly for Emaxis funds, however, I have a small Upro/TMF play and they were my best option. Very easy to use once the funds are in.
