Costco Credit card

Post by nagasakirams »

I have been rejected for Costco Mastercard credit card. I'm a bit surprised as I have never been rejected for a card in Japan before. I am also a long time Costco in Japan user. Should I worry about my credit rating in Japan? My main card for over 10 years is also Mastercard. Could that be a reason?

Pretty hard to know, though it might have to do with the number of cards and cumulative credit limits.

I feel like Japanese card companies are pretty conservative with their credit lines. Mine are all under ¥500,000 I think, whereas American card companies will give you $20,000 without even asking.

I got shot down for an AEON YaMaYa card recently, even though I have had a COSMO AEON for a decade (and a Saison, DC, and the Costco Orico).

Yes, refusals can be random.

Rakuten approved-> Rakuten gold

Amazon Gold approved

Monex Card -> Denied

I was told that if there is any name issue, or you have trouble linking your bank account, the denial is often automatic.

Like the others, I have a number of cards but have also been rejected as well.

House loans, I also have 3 acceptances and 2 rejections on my scorecard.
Who knows why...just have to deal with it and move on I think.
Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

Since you appear to be a long-term resident, I guess that the visa duration isn't a problem.
Changed jobs, or started a business recently? I think that they tend to reject people that have a fresh work contract or switched companies in the past 1-2 years.

Thanks for all the replies. It seems rejections are more common than I thought.
The rejection was not because of visa status or banking details because I wasnt even at that stage. I filled out a preliminary application online at the Costco branch. I think they only asked my address, workplace, marital status etc. Perhaps, the fact that I'm recently divorced was a factor.

You may be right, but none of those factors related to my situation a when I last got dinged.
