So Cycle insurance is actually "personal liability insurance?"

Post by EmaxisSlim Cultist »

I have insurance through Rakuten (https://cycle.rakuten-sonpo.co.jp/)

I pay 6000 yen yearly for family coverage (本人、本人の配偶者、本人または配偶者の同居の親族および別居の未婚の子)

I now understand this insurance is more like general, personal liability insurance.

Does this extend to my 1 1/2 year old son and wife now since I purchased the family policy? If so it certainly seems like a decent deal.

[I.E - If he breaks a window playing baseball, or snaps another parents eyeglasses, is it covered under these types of plans]

That sounds about right. It also covers for liability when you're abroad.

Interestingly, your whole family is covered by the liability insurance even if you take out the individual plan. The difference with the family plan is that your family is also covered by the injury part of the plan. So, if you are only bothered about the liability insurance, or you have injury insurance for your family elsewhere, you could go for the individual plan and save 3,000 yen.

We got out liability insurance with a different company through my son's school's PTA. It was 3,500 yen. It covers all of us for liability, but only my son has coverage for injury. It was a bit more expensive than the equivalent Rakuten plan (3,500 yen vs 3,000 yen) but it has higher coverage limits. For example the liability insurance is unlimited for domestic claims and 3 oku yen for claims abroad. Rakuten tops out at 1 oku yen for both. I'm sure that there are even cheaper deals if you shop around.

Very interesting. I was a little paralyzed by choice initially and just went with Rakuten. The bike show had an inflated plan they pushed.

This is a great thing to have now, especially considering the case in Oita this year. https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20 ... na/018000c
