Also I am lucky in that my company reimburses my phone expenses so I may as well get the latest and greatest even though my 11 still works perfectly fine. I know people complain about how expensive new smartphones are but honestly I think they are cheap given how much computing power and features they cram into them. I never cease to be amazed at how far the technology has come in such a short time.
I agree they are worth the price (be it iPhone or other). The real issue for me is that since the older phones are so powerful, it is hard to argue I need a better one. One, two, three cameras? Not really 'necessary' for me.

Battery life, screen condition and storage are the main reasons to upgrade, though the first two are relatively easy to replace.

Still using an Iphone 4S, my first smartphone that I got second-hand from a friend around 2012. I rarely do phone calls and mostly use if for instant messaging, so it's completely sufficient. However, more and more apps stop working, because the OS cannot be upgraded any more. From February next year, Whatsapp will stop working, so I am finally going to buy a new one.

So far I've had two SIM-free Google Nexus 5 phones, one for ¥2man which did last 5yrs, then the second ¥1man... I only had to change that second one as yeah, the version of Android was too old for the apps I use... Upgraded to a barely used SIM-free Pixel 4a from Yahoo Auction for ¥3man and I plan on keeping this guy till he becomes obsolete...
I am a little hesitant of using yahoo auction. You don't get any guarantee, right? There are also specialised second-hand dealers that give some (although mostly short-lived guarantee). Did you find that yahoo auction is significantly cheaper than those?

I got a cheap ¥8,000 android sim-free phone off Yahoo Auctions and used it in the US for a couple months. Then the keyboard started acting funky and it was a challenge to type correctly. Served its purpose, so not disappointed.

Definitely! Considerably cheaper...
Yeah, there's usually no guarantee, especially if you're buying from a random Joe... But factor that into how much you're willing to spend. Sometimes you can just luck out and find the guy/gal who bought the latest release from Apple/Google/Samsung, then a couple of months down the line realize they don't need it and sell for 50~60% retail... That's how I got my Pixel 4a.
Last year I picked up a 2010 Macbook Air 13" for ¥1man from Yahoo Auction and it works like a dream -perfect for the daily hammering it gets at the school I work at...
Would highly recommend Yahoo Auction -picked up so many bargains there over the years...
