What's a good VPN?

I'm looking for a VPN. Do you use one? Which one? Would you recommend it to a first-time VPN user like me?

I have seen adamu's thread over in the "Promo codes and affiliate links" section; I'm hoping this thread might result in other recommendations so I can make a more informed decision.

I use Windscribe. I've been happy it with although I don't have any demanding requirements.

They have a pretty generous free version, 10 GB p/m but with limited locations and cut-down features. I used that for a while and then paid for the Pro version, $18 for 20 months then $60 for 36 months (they have regular deals). They also have the option to create your own payment plan based on the locations you need.

They have Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS apps, and browser extensions. Also some other bits for routers and OpenVPN.

Not sure about speeds. Some say they're not the fastest but I have never tried anything else so I can't say. They don't advertise much if at all and have a no logging policy so seem trustworthy enough. But I'm no expert in these things

What do you want to use it for? I use NordVPN for occasionally viewing BBC iplayer and other stuff. It's fast enough and is cheap if you take out a multiyear subscription. I don't use Netflix so I can't vouch for that.

I use SurfEasy VPN, $50 per year, and I use it pretty much all day every day to connect to US, UK, Aus...
It allows 5 devices within the subscription, and is available on all platforms; PC, MAC, iPhone, iPad, Android
You can remove and add devices as required - Max 5.

In case people want to get the BBC iplayer on a firestick.
Not for personal use obviously. Just to allow license fee paying relatives keep up with soaps when they visit.

I went with Windscribe based on recommendations here and elsewhere and it's working so far!
Followed these instructions.

High level process:
1. Install Windscribe(or preferred VPN) on the firestick, sign in and activate UK VPN.
2. In the firestick settings change to allow downloads from unknown sources.
3. Search then install the "Downloader" app.
4. From within the Downloader app, Install the iplayer app using the URL from the link.
5. Launch iplayer on the firestick. A code should appear.
6. Make sure you also have the VPN up on your mobile phone/pc and follow the onscreen instructions to login from that device entering the code you see on the firestick screen when prompted.
7. Have a nice cup of tea. You've earnt it.

Using VPN on iPhone / iPad, (and possibly Android, but no experience), you would need to install apps, but most of the Apps are only available in that country's iTunes Store... ;-(

Which in turn means you need to create an iTunes account in that country, but you don't have an address and credit card in that country... ;-(

You can create an iTunes account with a Pre-Paid Card, but you need to buy (or get someone to buy for you) in country, or buy on Amazon.

Then you can create the iTunes Account, download the apps, which are all free, and then view over the VPN.
Therefore, you only need the absolute minimum denomination card to use to set up the account...

Remember to switch back to your Japanese iTunes account for other App purchases as you don't want the hastle of having to recharge you overseas account... $10 or 10 quid will just sit there forever ...

This is a good point. I inititially installed iplayer to my iphone.
To install BBC iplayer I was able to change my region/country to UK on my iphone.
I did NOT enter a payment method but put in phone/physical address in the UK then downloaded.
Then changed Country/Region back to Japan to see that my payment details had been erased.

I didn't stick with this method as I was using Chromecast.
So I would have needed to install the VPN on my router and that's not one I can manage.
