What is the popular marketplace for used goods in Japan for English speakers? Craigslist seems pretty dead but it is hard to tell..
I have a bunch of English books that I want to sell. Is there some other place that I don't know about? Also want to sell my bicycle..
Selling used stuff
Re: Selling used stuff
Nothing specifically in English. Mercari and Yahoo Japan are the two largest sites here.
For books, take a look at Infinity books. I usually give mine away to friends now, after failing to sell them on the Japanese sites.
For a bike, it may be better looking for a local 2nd hand shop to take it, unless it is really high-end. The cost/inconvenience of sending it may make it difficult to shift on an Internet market.

Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

If you are looking to selling things to other English speakers surprising Facebook is a good option. There are entire groups dedicated to this. Google "Sayonara sale".beanhead wrote: ↑Sun Jul 18, 2021 2:17 pm Nothing specifically in English. Mercari and Yahoo Japan are the two largest sites here.

Like the previous user said, if you're looking to sell to english speakers, your best bet will be Facebook Groups (look up something like "Tokyo Flea Market" or "Tokyo Sayonara Sales" and replace Tokyo with the place you're living).7-seasons.com wrote: ↑Sun Jul 18, 2021 10:41 am What is the popular marketplace for used goods in Japan for English speakers? Regarding the books, I would sell them on Mercari. Yahoo auctions is too difficult to use in my opinion.
For the bicycle, I would either use Facebook Groups or Jmty. Jmty is all in Japanese (like Mercari and Yahoo), but its the best option for larger stuff like bicycles or furniture. When you put up an ad you can choose the area where you live so you won't have to ship it if anyone wants to buy it.
As a last resort, you can sell everything at Book-off/Hard-off or any other second hand shop. Most likely, they will only give you a couple of yen tho. Last time I went there to sell some books they would pay 50 yen for them

Thanks! I was not aware of these options.
I have gone through Book Off previously but I definitely felt like I lost on that deal. I would have gotten more value from a nice little bonfire with my books and roast marshmellows over them on the beach.

The Sayonara Sales on FB are pretty active.
English books are sold on Yahoo Auctions, but not in volume.
