Spot purchase of ETF or stock on R or SBI

Post by Teru »

Hi All,
My husband has both a Rakuten and SBI securities account and has ETF (or Mutual Fund?) positions in each. He has arranged automatic withdrawal from his bank account for deposits into these positions each month (I guess this is dollar cost averaging?). When he initiated the positions it took a few days for them to appear in his account. The other day he added a position to the SBI account, and again, it took a couple of days to appear. He might have made these purchases outside market hours. Is it normal for it to take time to appear in an account? Is this the case for both MF/ETF and for individual stock? I have an IB account where a purchase shows up immediately. Information, sites with this information (E or J), and advice would be welcome. Thank you!

Just guessing, but the difference between IB and local accounts is whether they list (or not) only after it settles.

Settlement usually takes a couple days, so with rakuten/sbi it's that they only list something on the account after it settles.

IB very likely lists trades at the moment they are made (stocks and ETFs), but if you look more carefully, those will take a couple days to settle (like, if it's a sale, you using those funds to then do certain other things will be restricted).

The other factor is that stocks/ETFs are priced at the moment the trade is made, and MFs are only priced once a day.

Thank you, captainspoke for your response. I'll look into whether his positions are MFs or ETFs and see how long it takes for each to register purchases. If I find out anything worthwhile, I'll post again.
