I have a savings account with JP Post. I've received a postcard from them asking me to log in to this website:

I've been asked to put in lots of details, including things like residence card number, status of stay, income levels and so on. Has anyone else been asked to do the same thing? Is it a legal requirement? I can understand them wanting my MyNumber number, but what does my immigration status have to do with it? I suppose I gave the same information when I opened the account but this makes me feel uncomfortable...

I was sent a postcard in late 2019 asking me to come to the branch of my local bank with resident card, and they asked me what I used the account for. Erm, banking? They didn’t send me one last year though. From memory, others had similar experiences around then, and the consensus was that they were checking resident status of customers. Don’t remember them asking about income though, that would have made me think none of your business. The website link you posted looks legit at least.

Yeah, I got one. They arrive every once in a while - from other banks, too.

I got it - started filling in details on the website but then it wouldn't accept my address in any form - romaji, kanji, kana, half-width, whatever so I just gave up. It did just say in the postcard something like 'we would appreciate your cooperation' and didn't say it absolutely had to be done. I'm sure they';; get back to me if they really insist on it.

My initial response to things like that is to throw them away, and I only comply when I start getting the letters in pink envelopes that say 'we will close your account next week'.

I cracked and did it this evening. My PR application is currently being processed so everything keeps telling me to be as good a boy as possible.
I entered the minimum I had to. Most boxes were "must-fill-in" but some weren't.
I had to enter my nationality, residence status and expiry date but could omit putting in my residence card number. Had to put in what kind of worker I am (self-employed and in which industry) but could omit further details about what I do, where I do it, and how much I make.
Had to answer what I use the account for (savings/paying bills) and where I get my money from (salary/savings).
Further questions I had to answer were, do I plan to have any single transactions of over 2 million yen and do I plan to make any international transfers.
But interestingly, they didn't ask me for my MyNumber number.
So, done. Annoying but painless.
