Any thoughts on eMAXIS NASDAQ100インデックス?

Post by RMA »

I have seen that Nasdaq is consistently performing better than SPX so was thinking of adding littel of eMAXIS NASDAQ100インデックス to my portfolio. How is it different from emaxis slim series? Does it have higher fees compared to our favorite emaxis slim all country fund?

An important thing to look out for, first and foremost, is overlap with other parts of your portfolio...if you own any other index funds, such as an all-country fund, a developed world fund, an SP500 fund, etc., you already own many, if not all, of the NASDAQ 100 stocks. As such, this product is useful only if you specifically want to increase the ratio that NASDAQ 100 stocks comprise within your portolio.

It will cost you extra to do so, however, because this fund has a somewhat high (relative to some other emaxis funds) fee ratio of 0.44%.

As for potential future performance, your guess is as good as anyone's. NASDAQ had been flying very high for a long time, and one could convincingly argue that is likely to continue, while someone else might be equally convincing arguing that it's way overvalued.

Thank you for your reply. Other than fees, how is it different than emaxis slim funds? Also then there is Maxis Nasdaq which I believe is ETF but I am not sure about it's fees and the reinvestment procedure and tax implications there on. So I am also trying to figure out the differences between emaxis Nasdaq vs maxis Nasdaq.

Sorry to bother you but Japan like to complicate things as it is and then there is a language problem on top of that.

As for higher exposure to certain stocks, I am aware of that and will do my calculations accordingly.

On the question of "what's the difference between emaxis vs. emaxis slim", first off, both are MUFG's series of index funds. The emaxis branded series is a big bigger (approx.30 funds), while there are about 12-13 emaxis slim funds. Some indexes (like the NASDAQ 100) are only offered on the emaxis series. All of the emaxis slim indexes are also available in the emaxis series.

So if you take any emaxis slim fund, and compare it to its emaxis like-for-like counterpart, the ONLY difference is the fee structure. You pay more for the emaxis series than the emaxis slim series, even for tracking the exact same index. Why? That comes down to sales channels. The emaxis series is offered by more than 100 different financial institutions, who have sales people who earn a commission if they sell those funds. Those commissions are ultimately paid from the fees. The emaxis slim series, on the other hand, is offered by only about 15 financial institutions, all via online sales only, and no commissions are paid.

Many funds/ETFs track the exact same underlying index. In those cases, just compare the fees and buy the cheapest one. The product itself is the same.

A board member compared the MAXIS ETFs and Emaxis Slim fund performance. The Slim funds come out on top due to dividend reinvestments.

Thank you for your reply. This is what I was looking for. So the difference between emaxis and emaxis slim is only of fees and nothing else. I checked and found out their fee structure as under:

emaxis NASDAQ 100 - fees 0.44%
emaxis S&P 500 - fees 0.33%

emaxis slim S&P 500 - fees 0.0968%
emaxis slim Global Equity (all country) - fees 0.1144%

So basically emaxis slim funds beats emaxis funds by fees margins. As for NASDAQ, currently the same is available in emaxis but not on emaxis slim. Guess I should better wait for NASDAQ to appear in emaxis slim or similar funds with low fees.

You have a few more options!

Did you check out the domestic ETFs like MAXIS 2631?

Thank you very much for your reply. Actually I was considering MAXIS 2631 but after reading the other post on this forum (MAXIS ETFs vs eMAXIS Slim mutual funds), I pretty much made up my mind to consider picking emaxis MF over maxis ETF mainly because ETF does not offer automatic reinvestment of dividends.
