I've applied for a Rakuten bank card, gone through a lot of bullshi- I mean, a lot of hoops regarding the name characters, then my middle name thing, etc. etc. but it looks as though it's finally going through now. However, even though I (thought I) applied for a Rakuten credit card, to get those delicious points, it seems that I automatically got switched to a Rakuten debit card?
I mean, I don't mind, in fact I might even prefer it to prevent me from overspending, however my question is- does the 500 points thing still apply for a debit card as it does with a credit card? Or will I have to go through all this rigmarole again to get the credit card, too?

It does, but you may only get 0.5% back in points instead of 1%. But stay one or two years in good standing and apply for a credit card again, and odds are that you will get it

So my Rakuten credit card arrived, but as usual, they butchered my name with katakana on the front of the card and I get "name does not match" when trying to link it to my bank account or investment account :x Filled in the paperwork, now have to wait 1-2 months for them to update it. So annoying!

I also got drawn into signing up with Rakuten mobile and broadband while looking at the superpoint accumulation stuff. To be fair, having everything within the Rakuten group seems to have a lot of benefits. I'll get 200 superpoints every month for having broadband, 500 every month for having the auto deposits with Rakuten securities and a 4-5x multiplier for anything purchased on Rakuten ichiba.

Nothing against you or anyone who is into it, but this is why I like cash.

I know what you mean, but their 5gig mobile package was also 300 yen cheaper per month than line mobile and broadband 1,700 yen cheaper than my previous Softbank deal. A decent saving along with the points! :D Now just to see if I can get the automatic investments working when the card name gets updated.

I tried everything I could online but the fact of the matter is that the system just doesn't allow for it. In the end, I had to phone them up, make sure I got through to an operator, explained the situation and asked them to force it on their end. Also, make sure to confirm the order in which your name is printed and how they will ask for confirmation ID when recieving your card.
For example, If I want the name on my card to be the same as it actually is, Albert Brian Christianson (random ABC name), but my ID has it in the Japanese order of Christianson Albert Brian, then the person delivering it won't hand it over because it's not EXACTLY the same. I had a problem where my ID had my middle name, but the card itself didn't because of system restrictions.

Long story short; the online system is practically useless for foreign names. Best to put the application through, then call them up to get the name right. Confirm with other accounts (Rakuten Card, Rakuten Bank and Rakuten Securities are all different) to make sure they're all the same, again, through phone because system=crap. Then you should finally be able to get going.

Unfortunate but accurate. I had the same issue and had to call them up to get it sorted.

Hi, my name goes over the limit for Rakuten Card even when closing up spaces between names.
Rakuten Card are adamant that they cannot add my middle name as there is no space.
Can Rakuten Securities, which uses my full name, find a work-around so that I can use the Credit Kessai function to pay Tsumitate NISA?

I described my experience in the link below, in case it helps anyone with a similar problem.
In my case, neither Rakuten Card or Rakuten Securities changed their versions of my name in English. I think it was adding a middle name to the furigana that did the trick.
