Just looking at some potential side investments...
I personally can't imagine the global renewable energy market doing anything but growing in the next 20 years, no?
How about this fund? iShares S&P Global Clean Energy Fund ETF
Those other eMaxis NEO funds are also very tempting, but like someone else stated, maybe i'll wait till the value drops...
All things being equal, it should be a growth sector. However, there are so many complicating factors. I do not think it is that simple on the face of things. Government regulation, billions in fossil fuel lobbying, poor grid infrastructure, red tape, expense, and a lack of options for consumer-level solutions. With the US. being only half of the holdings, you also have to consider the state of these things in other countries.

I do not see anything wrong with the fund, but there is a lot of money and influence making the opposite bet.

Just a thought.
Food for thought for sure...

You wouldn't happen to know a tracker that follows the S&P Global Water ETF that I can find here in Japan?
Searching the iShares ticker IH20, and Invesco CGW bring up nothing on Rakuten...
I don't know how comfortable/ethical I feel investing in water, but I guess with the constant rise in global temperatures, it has to be a market that will continue to grow...

Mizuho - iシェアーズ グローバル・ウォーター UCITS ETF(米ドルクラス)

But again, I would caution this approach to investing.

You are not investing in water as a commodity, but in the access right, treatment, utilities, and infrastructure.

You were looking for sector ETFs with much lower expense ratios.

It looks like Rakuten offers 10 sector ETFs through Vanguard wrappers.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I just wanted to bring attention to this very ETF (ICLN). I think it's a VERY strong bet with today's course of events over in the US. Thoughts?

Well, to be transparent, I bought Exxon and Valero a bit back so I’m excited about oil’s short term future. I’m all for cleaner energy (whatever that means) but I also an investor that want returns. People use oil today and tomorrow especially when economies get working again. I am looking for investments in clean energy when I can see some good business models where companies are making money or have a plan to make money. Is there an etf that blends old vs new energy models? That would be really interesting.

I think most of the oil companies (some more than others?) are trying to diversify so they don't become completely irrelevant.

I think you’re right and most have a lot of cash to accelerate their way into this space. However, we’ll be using oil for quite some time. Even Elon Musk was discussing this that it needs to be a gradual shift to sustainable energy. He’s got a recent long, rambling 3 hour interview on the Joe Rogan podcast if you’re interested to hear his thoughts.

As an investor, I think there’s great opportunity to collect wonderful dividends from oil while finding good sustainable energy start ups. I’m sure there’s an ETF around here somewhere. I’ll come back when I find one.

There's an argument to be made for investing in nuclear power as a transitional energy source between fossil fuel and renewables.

And from an ecological perspective it also makes sense as it is far far better than all the coal plants that are being run right now to power japan(because of the nuclear scare and many of the reactors still being off). But a lot of people are just scared of it.

I spent a few hours mucking around ETFs and there’s nothing that I can find that combines the different sources evenly. Some energy funds are market cap weighted so it’s 98% oil companies. Some are “green” ETFs and lack current energy companies. Nuclear doesn’t seem to have it’s own category. Seems ripe for a new ETF or mutual fund to be created!
