I will open a MONEX account too. seems very easy to do so.
And use it for the IDeco option.

I guess Rakuten wont be getting the emaxis fund, but I can use the NISA in Rakuten..

for my lump sum, would it be better to invest in more than one investment? to be on the safer side?
as for the monthly contribution, which will only be max 23000yen a month, what would be the ideal (if there is such a thing) number of funds to invest in?
From what I know, you cannot do a lumpsum purchase in IDECO. Only monthly contributions which you can amend annually.

Correct me if I am wrong, anyone?

That is my understanding.

Also, once the month is over you have lost your opportunities to contribute that month's amount. It is on a per month basis and that allowance does not bank if left unutilized.

However, you can set a different amount to be contributed each month of the year when applying, but only up to a monthly amount.

This is why setting up an iDeco is the priority.

Setting up a Nisa is less of a priority because even with Tsumitate Nisa you have up until December 2021 to contribute this year's full amount.

Another reason to open iDeCo account first is that it can take 2-3 months for the paperwork to go through and the account to start operating. You snooze, you lose even more months ;)

Also worth mentioning:

While NISA is usually handled as part of the regular trading account, iDeCo is often a completely seperate account, managed via a separate website with separate login details and application process. So even if you have a NISA account, you have to apply from scratch for an iDeCo and staying loyal to the same company doesn't really save you any time or effort. Therefore, it's best to go for the company that has the funds you want.

Rakuten handles Nisa quite sensibly. It appears in your regular portfolio with a NISA label. It is also accessible and viewable in a separate tab.

iDeco is a separate tab, but does not integrate.

The application process is separate as you said and will take around 1 -2 months or so for Nisa.

IDeco takes longer as you are applying basically to separate companies. Rakuten and the is&t a private company that holds the contract for iDeco management for all firms.

.....

Finally, there has been talk on this board in the past of a way to get an iDeco account directly without a securities account?

What would the fund selection be like then?

thank you for all the great replies. This will make it easier to decide.
ive been looking around this morning at ranking for opening an iDeco account, and SBI seem to be pretty high if not the highest of them all.

don't see Monex that often in any ranking list. So why are so my on this forum talking about Monex? Am i missing something here?

Thank you.

Rakuten seemed pretty high up on the lists too. Though they dont have access to the emaxis line-up (SBI does)

Monex allows you to buy into the eMaxis All Country fund through your iDeCo. SBI and Rakuten don't (they offer access through NISA though).
Investments:
Company DB scheme ✓
iDeCo (Monex) eMaxis Slim All Country ✓
新NISA (SBI) eMaxis Slim All Country ✓
Japanese pension (kosei nenkin) ✓
UK pension (Class 2 payer) ✓

The fund that I and some others here prefer, eMaxis Slim All Country, is only available at two iDeCo providers that I know of: Monex and Matsui.

The reason I like that fund is that with single fund, you can invest in the MSCI All Country World Index, which represents every publicly tradable stock in the world. It's the height of simplicity. SBI and Rakuten have similar offerings, but they wrap up US ETFs and have questionable taxation and fee structures. eMaxis slim actually run their own fund.

That's why Monex is recommended. I'm not sure why others don't mention Matsui - I think it's just because nobody here has experience with them yet.

My account is with SBI. While All Country isn't available, there are two ways to simulate it with the eMaxis Slim funds they have:
All Country ex Japan Fund + Japan Fund
Developed Markets Fund + Emerging Markets Fund + Japan Fund

Again a lot of amazing advice from many.
This is helping a lot.....

But some more questions came in my head.

1: in time, can various brokers add new funds/ etfs to their line for iDeco?

2: since iDeco maxes at 23000yen, what if emaxis or any other funds/ etfs i have rise above that limit, won’ti be forced to allocate my 23000yen elsewhere?

3: wouldn’t it be a smarter choice to chose a broker which has a bigger iDeco lineup , so that it’ll give me more options/ possibility?

4: with a maximum of 23000yen to invest monthly with iDeco , what would be a smart number of funds/ etfs to invest in?

Thank you

1. Probably to stay competitive. However some brokers were made to shrink their offerings by the government I believe. To simplify things.

2. Mutalfunds are bought in dollar / yen amounts. Not shares.

3. More is not better necessarily. There are a lot of terrible high priced funds.

4. This is more question of personal choice and risk. However iDeCo allows you to rebalance penalty free anytime. because of this feature I recommend people start with 100% equities.
