Defense MF/ETF

Post by Ori »

There was a link to an article about impending cold war between USA an China in one of the recent Monday Reads from Ben. And the author was suggesting to buy stocks of defense companies (coincidentally, he is a CEO of investment company with defense portfolio ;) ).
I was wondering what does everyone thinks about such an investment and if there are any good MF/ETF?
The article itself: https://contrarianedge.com/us-and-china ... -cold-war/
Some funds I found:

It might be worth asking this on a larger, more general investing forum.

Defense ETFs are looking a bit beaten up at the moment. That's probably due to the effects of COVID-19 on the aviation industry. It's something to think about alongside any thoughts of a new cold war. Investing in these ETFs is basically a side bet which could go either way.

Personally, I think relations between China and the US will probably be a little bit less tense under Biden.

It appears that this question was irrelevant, because none of the ETFs in question can be purchased via Japanese brokers (at least not via Rakuten or SBI) :( . And I couldn't find any Japanese ETF or MF investing in defense or aerospace.
There was one Fidelity fund, though, which can be purchased via Nomura, but I don't have account there, so I didn't bother to research it.

Thanks for the link! Indeed, it would seem like a good alternative, if not for the TER. It is a whopping 1.074%, which is more than I would like to pay...

That's their declared ER. But I always look at the fund's real ER in 交付運用報告書 (under 1万口当たりの費用明細). And their TER last year was 1.074%.

Ah, that is a good catch.

These NEO funds are the closest thing we have to ARK funds in Japan.

I am also reluctant to invest at those high rates.

Really? I'd like to explore that. Which NEO fund(s) and which ARK funds are you saying are close?

Fintech and Self-driving and Generic Engineering.

Have a look. https://emaxis.jp/index.html

Expense ratios are high though, as you would expect for a managed fund.
