SBI Tax Harvesting/Management

Post by concerned »

I have an index fund which is in profit, and have some stocks with losses in SBI. I was planning to sell the index fund with the profit, and then sell enough stocks in which I have losses to offset the profit. I presume I just sell both in the same day, and if the loss offsets the gain I pay no tax. Is there anything I should watch out for? Such as should I sell the stocks with the losses first and then sell the index fund I have the profit ? The order does not matter?

I think you just have to sell them both in the same calendar year, not necessarily the same day :)

It is very easy if you have a 特定口座(源泉徴収あり) account.

I've never sold at a loss - but I've found it's quite difficult to get SBI to tell you how much tax they withheld at or just after placing the order. It doesn't tell you when you make the order, nor in the order history. Where it does show up is on the 入出金明細 screen, but there it just shows up as 譲渡益税源泉徴収金 with no indication of which trade it was actually for. Even then, I think it takes some time to show up (maybe until the 受渡日 but that's just a guess), so until then you can work it out by looking at your 買付余力 which mysteriously differs from the amount you sold for by the amount of tax due. I'm sure there must be a better way...

It's clearer on the お取引の明細 PDF they generate every three months, which has the sale transaction and tax payment grouped together on subsequent lines.

Thanks a lot. It is better than nothing. I still havent found out the exact gain and tax calculation as it seems to always differ a few yen.
