Re: Sequence of returns risk and the 4% rule
I think it makes sense, as it mirrors how people will react in real life. No one is going to keep taking out 4%+inflation in the face of a stock market crash. Instead, they are going to cut their discretionary spending and wait for their portfolio to recover. Personally I am planning to take a fixe...

Re: Online university courses for upskilling
Also check out https://www.london.ac.uk/. I took some courses through it - it was challenging but a really positive experience and helped me get a qualification that enhanced my career. You can sit many of the exams in Tokyo at the British Council.

Re: Carson Block on passive investing
If there is one thing AI is actually good for it is condensing down long videos into short text takeaways. So I asked gemini to summarize the main points: I appreciate the sentiment (ended up watching the video at 2x speed 😅 myself), but AI generated content is not allowed on the forum. At this poi...

Re: Carson Block on passive investing
My view: if there were any distortions caused by passive investing then active investors (like Block) would be easily able to use arbitrage to beat the market. Since passive has been around for decades and active funds still underperform it suggests that there either are no distortions or the distor...

Re: NISA and gift tax
Off topic and unhelpful comment forthcoming but levying gift tax on transfers between spouses is insane. I would love there to be the concept of joint accounts and joint tax filings here. It just seems so anti-family in a nation where they need more families.

Re: Brainstorm: all the ways to reduce taxes in Japan
1) Payments to support family members up to 360K per year I believe 2) In additional to depreciation for domestic commercial properties, expenses related to rental properties whether domestic or overseas. For business owners there are probably a lot of other expenses that can be claimed but for sala...

Re: UK property sale, CGT, residency
I'm prepared for the UK CGT. I just want to try to avoid the huge CGT I would have to pay in Japan if resident here. 2 properties in UK with potential total sale value of 1.3M GBP. Gain over purchase price of approx. 600k @ 24% CGT = 144k GBP in UK. (If I can get away with using the gain since 2015...

Re: UK property sale, CGT, residency
I have a somewhat similar situation (Canada, not UK though) so I am also curious whether this might work. If you haven't done so I suggest posting the question on Japan Finance Reddit forum also in the hope that u/starkimpossibility provides an answer. He or she has provided amazing responses on sim...
