Re: My case (overseas investment, capital gains, refinancing mortgage)
I'm not sure what you should do--which course of action you should choose--but I'll just offer that I was a 'participant' in one of these schemes, pretty long ago now. Luckily, I blundered into the lump sum version, and not the regularly-monthly contributions option. And didn't go all in. I checked ...

Re: Son at Japanese uni graduating later than 4yrs
I'm not a hiring/personnel person, but isn't it simply more important that a person has graduated (has a degree) than how long it took to finish? Also, uni taking five years might be more common than you think. Students do a study abroad, and not all of the credits transfer--or they missed a require...

Re: Getting up to date vaccination in Japan
Shingrix is one I'd suggest, if you're a little older. Many clinics can give it, but you'll need to reserve a few days ahead of time. It's two shot sequence a few weeks apart, about ¥20-22K/per shot. Also Pneumovax, one shot, every 10(?)yrs. I don't think japanese encephalitis is much of a worry in ...

Re: UK Will - to Trust, or not Trust - Pros/Cons?
Japan doesn't recognize trusts, or rather, it sees thru them. The problem is the kind of trust that delays disbursement of any funds, such as if when I die, my trust awards certain funds at some future time (such as a child's future birthday--on turning 25, 30, 35, and so on). Japan would see the ch...

Personally, I very much appreciate the summary.
It should be a law
that every maker of such videos should have to post a stickied (AI-generated) comment that summarizes their content.
I mean really, an hour to convey those points?
This just confirms how much time might have been wasted.

Re: WEP document submission question
Not sure about your questions on the pensions here, but I hope that some of the other things you mention are somehow applied to me! A retroactive bonus would be nice, especially when I've had my spidey senses on alert for something where I would need to confirm that I'm a valid SS recipient (that I'...

You get an extra deduction when filing (¥270k or ¥400k, depending on degree), plus some other tax relief--eg, the yearly car tax, which comes every spring, about ¥38-40k/yr, I just toss that slip in the glove box and ignore it.

Re: Western foreigners retiring or retired in Japan - how many???
I know of 6-7 local (provincial capital), and I know of a few folks who've retired from the uni I worked at long ago in tokyo. Another in Gifu, another in Hakodate, one in Osaka. (and me) This past fall, there were some announcements for a retiree get together in west shinjuku--I'm not there and may...
