Re: Transferwise - Bad Experience

Hey AustinJapan, thanks for the info and link to the reviews. I didn't realise so many people were unhappy with Transferwise. I submitted a transfer with them yesterday before seeing your posts. This is the fifth transfer I've done with them since I started using them last November. I've only ever t...

Re: Australians, let’s chip in for a willing and competent Tax Lawyer w

Don’t hold your breath. Rufus the Doofus’s book isn’t coming out any time soon. I think I’ll leave it to Thurston Howell the Fourth, or perhaps Gilligan. Superannuation—I personally wouldn’t use super as an investment vehicle unless either (a) you’ve got an existing account balance that you want to ...

Re: Australians, let’s chip in for a willing and competent Tax Lawyer w

… might trigger a whole new can of worms. Take your pick. There are plenty of cans to choose from! AustinJapan, it sounds like you’ve getting the idea. But there will be lots of messy details. The income will need to be translated into JPY at the time of receipt (even if you don’t actually convert ...

Re: Australians, let’s chip in for a willing and competent Tax Lawyer w

It is impossible to make decisions (such as making voluntary contributions to super, buying stocks such as lic's with fully franked returns etc..) without knowing this information and the correct tax implications thurston1, it sounds like you understand the issues though. I was like you. I spent qu...

Re: Australians, let’s chip in for a willing and competent Tax Lawyer w

AustinJapan, I think the important thing is to make a genuine attempt do get things right going forward—and to judge from you're questions, it sounds like you are. Tax authorities are more sympathetic towards people who are trying to do the right thing. When we first moved to Japan, we were renting ...

Re: Australians, let’s chip in for a willing and competent Tax Lawyer w

You misunderstand me. If you're a permanent tax resident of Japan, you should declare Australian source investment income in your Japanese tax return. I do. If you just ignore it, you'll get caught out sooner or later. I'm just saying that the advice might not give you the answer you're hoping for. ...

Re: Australians, let’s chip in for a willing and competent Tax Lawyer w

It’s not easy to find someone with the skill set to give this type of advice. The big four accounting firms can do it, but they charge a packet. Don’t expect your local tax agent to be full bottle on the Japanese and Australian tax regimes, including retirement and estate planning. And be careful wh...

Re: Tax on Fully Franked Dividends

OK, I see how it works now. Article 4 of the US-Japan tax treaty preserves the right for the US to tax (or, perhaps more accurately, screw) its citizens even if they live outside the US. Australian tax laws and the Australia-Japan tax treaty are different from those of the US. They still screw us, o...

Re: Tax on Fully Franked Dividends

For my US dividends I have to pay 23.8% tax to the US Internal Revenue Service and then an additional 10% tax to Japan Hey TokyoWart, where does the 23.8% come from? The US-Japan tax treaty (article 10) says the US can only impose tax of no more than 10% when a US company pays a dividend to a resid...
