Gift Tax question
My parents are planning to send me a significant sum of money as a gift later this year. The amount is over the 1.1 Million JPY Threshold. Details (I can add more if more specifics are required): - My parents are over 60 - They live abroad and we are not Japanese - For all intents and purposes Japan...

Re: what happens when you leave?
Exit tax... what happens if you do have over 100m in stocks held overseas? Asking for a friend..... My 2 cents: So, in theory, when you have more than 100m yen in stocks overseas, the Japanese government knows about it from you because you have to report it along your income tax every year. (that's...

Re: US Dividend taxes: 10% US + 20% Japan, no way around it?
- Tax credit on US dividends can be received in Japan in the case of individual stocks. This company's interpretation of the law is that this doesn't apply to mutual funds or ETFs (in my case, the dividends come from broad index ETFs), and that in this case the double taxation is inevitable. I just...

Re: Capital gain tax vs Income tax
I'm not sure what confuses you so much. Capital gain is income. If you mean a trader whose only source of income is trading income and they have no salary, they still pay income tax. Except their income is from capital gain instead of a salary. It's just a different entry on the income tax sheets. E...

Re: Modification of the Inheritance Tax for Foreigners / Likelihood?
Wow, some people on that reddit thread are basically suggesting that hiding their inheritance in the US might be a good idea. Someone needs to remind them that fraudulent reporting of oversea assets has some penalties here. Up to 1 year in prison I believe. Sleepless nights for decades over the fear...

Re: Prioritization - Financial Advice
For the NISA I think it's up to your financial institution. some of them might ask you to close (and cash out) the account when you leave, unless you can justify that this is temporary. (and typically, provide an address in Japan - e.g. family in law - where you can be reached). For the home, as oth...

Re: What exactly is 生命保険?
People at work are constantly telling me I need 生命保険, but I don't think I do. Am I wrong? +1 here with everybody who told you you don't need life insurance if you're single with no kids. If I were you I would ask back to the colleagues recommending that you get life insurance, to get their understa...

Re: Decided to buy a place - any tips on what to do/what NOT to do?
Anything else I should remember to check during the final house survey? Squeaky doors, windows, etc.? Definitely go through the house as if you were an detail-obsessed Japanese shopper, and make notes of everything you want taken care of prior to purchase. The last thing they want is for you to pul...

Re: FATCA Exempt?
My concern would be why being exempt of FATCA is something Schwab wants you to check. Is that a condition for them to accept you as a client oversea? Does that mean that ultimately, when you'll own more than 20M Yen in Japan, you'll need to do FATCA reporting and Schwab will close your account? Is i...
