Re: Simple Q&A - NISA

I don't think there's any problem there, but I do believe this money is construed as a gift for gift tax purposes, so I'd be careful when doing this with a non-tsumitate NISA. I'm doing this for my wife's Tsumitate though, so if I'm wrong about this, someone please correct me :) Thank you Zanuhesu!...

Re: Simple Q&A - NISA

Can you contribute to your spouse's NISA? Is there any rule that says contributions must come from earned income from the account holder? Forgive me if the question has been answered elsewhere. Re: Practicalities of Using an Online Bokerage

Doh! Looks like I was way off. I think you're right that I've been fumbling around in the regular brokerage website. Thank you for pointing us in the right direction! You have been most helpful adamu.

Practicalities of Using an Online Bokerage

Hi Everyone, Thanks to several helpful forum members and the Retire Japan iDeCo Guide, I have managed to open an iDeCo account with SBI Brokerage and decide the asset allocation (for my Japanese spouse). However, we are struggling to actually use the online platform to implement our plan. Any advice...

Re: Request for Feedback on iDeCo Asset Allocation

Thank you jcc. Good reminder that small fees can really add up over time. BTW, here is the most current asset allocation that we plan on using with an account at SBI Securities: 65% eMAXIS Slim全世界株式(除く日本) 0.15336% (World Stock Fund Excluding Japan) 10% eMAXIS Slim国内株式(TOPIX) 0.17172% (Japan Stock Fu...

Re: US Tax Returns - Significant Changes This Year

TokyoWart, okay great. I'm glad we're on the same page. I really appreciate these kinds of discussions too as it's a great way to learn and be thorough. After you mentioned form 8939, I immediately asked myself if I should be filing that one too, and checked the form instructions. Excellent that you...

Re: US Tax Returns - Significant Changes This Year

I did not know about the lower standard deduction for dependents. As you can see, there are huge gaps in my knowledge. I'm just a guy who tries to stay informed about US tax issues, mostly ones that apply to my specific case, so please don't take anything I say as advice. I am interested in learning...

Re: US Tax Returns - Significant Changes This Year

Wow, sounds like there have been several tax headaches and some real nightmares. I really hope tax filing goes smoothly this year for everyone. Form 1116, Form 8938 for each TokyoWart you might be able to save more time with your kids' tax returns in the future. The standard deduction ($12000) would...

US Tax Returns - Significant Changes This Year

I'm just finishing up my US tax return. It took quite a long time to put together this year. Apparently, "Congress has passed the largest piece of tax reform legislation in more than three decades." I also had to report a few cryptocurrency transactions. I was unsure how these short term g...
