Re: Help with NISA compound interest calculation
Is it even possible to lump sum an entire year's worth of New NISA? I somehow pieced out that you could only do that for the growth portion (2.4m), but that the tsumitate portion (1.2m) had to be filled in monthly installments. Was that a misunderstanding on my part?

Re: Selling stocks to build a house, is it a bad move?
Nice that you have mentioned this, because I've been meaning to ask about it. Being a person who tries to always have plan B, I was thinking that in event of our income significantly decreasing, in my home country (and many others, AFAIK) it would be possible to rent out rooms in a house to student...

Re: Switching from tsumitate NISA and if it's worth it
I would not extend this to the funds commonly recommended on this site: Emaxis Slim (All Country/Developed Countries and S&p500 funds) along with Rakuten-Vanguard products. 1. Rakuten Vanguard products invest in the American ETFs. It is harder to get safer than that. (VTI/VOO) 2. Emaxis Slim Pr...

Re: Switching from tsumitate NISA and if it's worth it
An often unstated assumption in many of the comparisons between NISA and Tsumitate NISA is that whatever investment vehicle you used in the starting year continues to exist throughout the tax-free period. That might sound far-fetched, but although I'm only doing NISA, I've already encountered that i...

Re: PR Application Denied - follow up meeting
Does anyone know if this examination of the spouse's tax and nenkin record also applies to PR applications other than those related to marriage? Because this thread has me slightly worried. I'm currently on an HSFP visa, and have been eligible to apply based on that for a while and dragging my feet ...

Re: Offsetting stock profits against bond losses
If those are Japanese stocks and Japanese bonds, the answer is most likely yes (this is called "son'eki tsuusan"). In fact, if all of your trades where in a tokutei kouza at the same financial institution with tax withholding, the broker should do that automatically. Otherwise, you will ne...

Re: Zaikei Account
You should expect the return on such an account to be essentially indistinguishable from zero (think interest rates of a few base points, i.e. hundredths of a percentage point). In fact, it's not unlikely that your entire profit could be eaten away by just the wire transfer fee from Mizuho to your o...

Re: Substitute Investing (代用有価証券) What did I get myself into?
Somehow my portfolio has some funds(stocks) under "代用有価証券" which probably translates to substitute securities. I have not idea what those are, nor do I remember buying any substitute securities. Can anyone shed some light on this? That seems to refer to securities posted as collateral for...

Re: How do dividends and reinvestment of dividends work?
Would/Should this still create a 'bump-up' in the base price on the distribution date? No. The increases should correspond to dividend distributions from the stocks/assets included in the fund, and those are spread out throughout the year. The distribution date of the fund itself (where it distribu...
