Re: What do you count towards your first 10 million yen?

I'm the same as Ben - count cash and investments but not home, car, possessions or government pensions.

Re: Strategy for the 2025 NISA

Sorry to take this slightly off tangent but it does relate to next year's NISA - does the tsumitate bit you have set up for this year automatically start up again next year or do we need to do something to get it going again? Once you set it up it continues running until you cancel or change it (or...

Re: Has anyone here renewed their Japanese driving licence?

Take the postcard that you are sent, along with your old license and I think you foreigner ID card, money, and a photo. They are kind of picky about the photo so it might be better to have it taken at the renewal place. During COVID, they didn't let you renew at the local places (usually near the p...

Re: Has anyone here renewed their Japanese driving licence?

If I remember correctly it was just a case of going to the police station, filling in a form and having an eye test. But I'm on a gold license. If you have been caught for any violations you usually have to sit and listen to a long lecture, which, in my area is at the nearest Driving Licence Centre....

Re: Life insurance vs inheritance

I recently had the misfortune to have to claim my wife's life insurance after she passed away, and I for one am extremely glad that we had decided to take out insurance when we became parents. Everyone's circumstances are different, but the payout has made the difference between being financially c...

Well, I did try but couldn't find any information about it. That's why I asked! And never having done this I don't know what charges come from the bank, or the ATM I'm using etc.

Re: Using UK bank card in Japan

Thanks - have no particular reason to use it right now, but wondered if it would be comparable to Wise. Probably a much smaller limit on what you can take out each day.

Using UK bank card in Japan

Just out of interest I stuck my UK bank card into a 7-11 machine to see if it would work. It seems to but I cancelled when it asked what I wanted to do. Anyone know what sort of exchange rate you get or what charges there are when pulling money from UK account in Japanese ATM? I don't really need to...

Re: Owning a second home abroad (without being rich :)

I have a property in the UK. I bought it outright and my parents live in it. I don't charge them any rent but it really doesn't cost me anything apart from insurance. Of course it could be a good income stream but I don't need it as an income source, and it is appreciating in value. As Deep Blue sai...
