Re: Personal Finance Hacks in Japan
Purchasing coupon tickets for transportation (where a monthly pass wouldn't apply). Either in batches for regular travel directly from the ticket machine or individually from discount ticket shops at a slight mark-up. Different services have different systems but saving 25-35% on weekend or holiday ...

Re: iDeCo performance
I've broken it down by fund:
DCニッセイ日経225インデックスファンドA - 4.20%
EXE-i 先進国株式ファンド - 2.82%
EXE-i 新興国株式ファンド - 0.08%
iFree NYダウ・インデックス - 3.10%
That's for 12 months, Oct '18 to Sep '19. Definitely time to get rid of those EXE-i funds I guess.

Re: iDeCo performance
That's a great point! AUD has certainly been weakening against the yen. I absolutely need to take that into consideration, thanks for the reminder.

Re: iDeCo performance
Thanks for the feedback. I bought a parcel of VANGUARD MSCI INDEX INTERNATIONAL SHARES ETF around the same time that I opened my iDeCo (late Jul) and that's done over 12% since (including divs). And my iDeCo should have been buying through the lows in Dec/Jan (monthly contributions) so I guess I jus...

iDeCo performance
I'd just like to check in about my fund choices for iDeCo. I created my account about a year ago and I have been trying to follow the advice of just letting it do its thing. I logged in only a couple of times just to make sure money was going where it was supposed to and nothing obviously weird was ...

Re: Submitting a tax adjustment
I want to thank everyone for their advice. I followed it all, created spreadsheets to smooth things out, printed all my sources, even was able to explain about the tax I had already paid on my bank interest and get the appropriate deduction. I went to the tax office on Tuesday, had to wait 3 hours b...

Re: Submitting a tax adjustment
Oooof. No, I don't sell anything abroad and all my funds are accumulation rather than distribution (because I didn't want to deal with tax stuff) :) I am not sure how much detail the tax office will want. In the comments on that post someone mentioned using a bank rate (as that tends be be better f...

Re: Submitting a tax adjustment
Thanks, I did read through that post. So I'll need the exchange rate for both the day of purchase and the day of sale? Is there an official source of exchange rates that can be used for this purpose? Also, I broke my sale up into two lots, that which is covered by capital gains and that which is not...

Submitting a tax adjustment
I'm looking to submit a tax adjustment at the tax office this year. Previously I've been able to have it done by my employer but my foreign income for 2018 is borderline on the 200,000 yen mark and I turned over my portfolio so I have a ton of capital gains to report. Also, I opened an iDeco last ye...

Re: NISA account on SBI, tax options?
Also check out step 4 from RetireJapan's Start Here post: http://www.retirejapan.info/blog/start-here The first step is to open the accounts. We recommend using the big online stockbrokers (Monex, SBI, Rakuten). You can open all the accounts with one company or spread them around. Most people shoul...
