Re: Who knew? 4 Avantis' active ETFs are now available in Japan

I use some of the Avantis ETFs in my portfolio. The company is very similar to DFA in their approach to factor investing and rules-based stock selection. There is a blog post below which might be of interest: https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/avantis-vs-vanguard/ Not sure of the right POV or word(s...

Re: Ideco - Recommended point to switch focus to Nisa.

This calculation assumes that 163,200 yen savings will not be reinvested. We are seeking to find the breakeven point at which the tax-savings is equal to the tax payment. We have to assume an average market return. It seems that that number is around 15-20 million yen assuming the investment has 25...

Re: Ideco - Recommended point to switch focus to Nisa.

I can't be sure but I think you might be undervaluing the tax-free benefit from using the iDeCo. At one point you posted: Isn't the calculation simply the 163,200 yen yearly "tax savings" from IDeco, in comparison to the extra tax I would pay in tax with a larger IDeco pot? This exercise i...

Re: Ideco - Recommended point to switch focus to Nisa.

Why wouldn't you want to max both iDeCo and NISA? For iDeCo you are getting income out of your current marginal tax bracket so it has advantages over investing in a regular taxable brokerage account once you have maxxed out the NISA limits. (I am not following the logic for stopping use of the iDeCo...

Re: Retirement planning

If you are employed full time, then the Pension Contribution for National Kousei Nenkin is 18.3% of your Gross Salary, 9.15% paid by you and deducted from your paycheck before Tax and the other 9.15% paid directly by your employer, again before tax, but it doesn't show up on your payslip. Isn't thi...

Re: Dividend Retirement Question

The dividend and capital gain tax rate in Japan does not increase above that 20.315% rate. If your only income is qualified dividends and you are filing married-filing-jointly you actually can be tax-free on the US side up to (for 2024): $89,200 + $29,200 (2 standard deductions if under 65) = $118,4...

Re: Caution - GMO Bank Aozora - Security Concerns

Very sorry that you are in this situation. I do want to thank you for sharing the details of what happened because this is making me reconsider how I should be protecting my accounts and whether I should ever use Apple's payment services.
