Thank you for this. In a nutshell, the 20.315 rate only applies to investments within Japan, correct? When I partially cashed in my overseas insurance policy I was hoping I could pay tax at this rate, but instead it was treated as miscellaneous income, and therefore taxed higher.

Interest from foreign savings accounts
If you remit interest accumulated in an overseas savings account to Japan, how is it treated for tax purposes? Does it qualify for the 20.315% rate as investment income?

Yeah, it does seem a bit arbitrary, but on paper I think I have a decent chance of qualifying for Class 2. Fingers crossed.

Under current rules, for Class 2 you would pay a total of 6,279 pounds for an annual pension of 11,502 pounds for the rest of your life. For Class 3 you would pay a total of 31,759 pounds for the same annual pension. I am not eligible to pay Class 2, but for me at least Class 3 is an excellent inve...
