Re: Cash poor, need advice.
So Nisa is not doing all that great. Earning like 4 to 6% last I looked. While my crypto bank is paying out 8% interest currently. So if they are both equal otherwise, Nisa would be the better option. I wouldn't touch NISA, it is supposed to be a long term investment in savings to have available du...

Re: Cash poor, need advice.
I know how this sub feels about crypto, but I have enough put away in a crypto lending bank that offers 20% LVT collateral loans at 0% interest. So my understanding here is I lose control of the collateralized crypto until I repay the loan, but this would also be a 0 tax event too right? So Nisa is...

Cash poor, need advice.
No point in going into reasons why right now. My wife and I have plenty tied up in investments but are very cash-poor atm. The emergency fund is currently mostly drained because of an expensive move (who am I kidding, it's expensive to move down the street in Japan). It did its job. We are worried t...

Re: Buy a house or be miserable?
The standard advice is if you can live in it for at least a couple of decades, buying a property will allow you to live somewhere nicer for less money. Buying and selling costs are 5-10% of the price, so it is generally a bad idea to buy and sell repeatedly. Of course, but is renting it out a viabl...

Buy a house or be miserable?
We are thinking of buying a house and if we have to move out in 4 years and move somewhere else, we can figure we can hire a PM and rent the house out. Is that crazy? Is that reasonable? Buying a house in Japan and selling it after 4 years is 100% a waste of money. The money from taxes, fees, and de...

Re: Reporting US investments to Japanese Tax Office
((On a side note, OP has probably not paid any tax on those dividends since, due to the FEIE, such a person starts with the equivalent of zero earned income, and it's not until there are fairly substantial dividends and/or gains, that such a person gets taxed at all on those--and I'm speaking from ...

Re: Tax implications of interest in a foreign bank account
40-50% (life-time profit) from various Fidelity mutual funds. Just performing REALLY well.
I have to pay tax on interest earned. But I just found out Japan also has a foreign earned income tax break. So the double taxation won't be so bad.

Re: Tax implications of interest in a foreign bank account
Woah... Hold on a sec. My mind is caving in from this. I just learned this as well. I have an investment account overseas. Let me get this straight. I get a paycheck in Japan. Japan takes their 25% or so tax out of it. I send $5,000 to the USA. I buy a mutual fund. 10 years later I sell that mutual ...

Re: Any US expats use an online financial advisor?
Can I bump this. I'm looking for a financial advisor. English speaking would be better because I handle our investments and have a better grasp on our financial stuff than my wife. I found a few for expats. But do I even need that? Anyone have experience with Argentum? Also found a single planner, Y...
