Re: Tax implications for sending large sums from US to Japan bank?
I realize this thread is quite dated, but it has some interesting questions that never appear to have been resolved. I'm just curious about the outcome and have a few related questions. 1. If the seller is a tax resident of the US how can Japan tax the remittance? Article 16 of the treaty appears pr...

Re: Foreign Pension Tax Ramifications
The problem is that in Article 2 lists only "income tax" and "corporate tax" as covered by the tax treaty. In Japan, there's shotoku zei (national income tax) and also jyumin zei (local inhabitant tax). I am very curious about the jyuminzei mentioned above. It makes sense that a...

Re: Japanese wife on title on US house
I agree with @ClearAsMud. You gifted your wife part of the property - how much she owns is likely half, but depends on how you took title and what state the property is located in. I would simply add that the gift was potentially taxable in the US as well. In the US, there are various limits for gif...

Re: Japanese wife on title on US house
Wow, this is a complex puzzle that you have presented. I'm definitely curious how this shakes out for you. I think you should consult with a estate lawyers on both sides - lawyers familiar with the tax treaty and, on the American side, preferably in the state where the property is located. I'm just ...

Dog friendly?
When I lived in Japan 15 years ago I never paid attention to how dog friendly Japan was. As I'm considering my move back I'm curious if I could get some advice in this department. I've discussed this with a realtor in Hiroshima and he said in the city it is difficult to find a manshon that will acce...

Fantastic! What are the odds that the rest of this process will be this easy?Beaglehound wrote: ↑Fri May 20, 2022 3:39 am
Might be best in that scenario to use a US account in your own name for such deposits, then remit to your account here. Once it’s here, no problem for your wife to access it for living expenses.

Re: Cash gifts between spouses
Fascinating topic. I'm new to the site. Made an initial and lengthy reply post in the dummies section. This "gift" area is a topic that I am very curious about. I wonder how far back the "gift" might be traced. We currently live in California. I'm a US citizen and my wife is a US...

Re: Moving to Japan Upon Retirement?
I'm new to this site. I really like this forum, it is incredibly interesting and threads such as these are very helpful for those of us considering retirement in Japan. I am in a similar position to those on this thread. I am a US citizen. My wife is a Japanese citizen (PR in US.) We are roughly thr...
