Re: Meaning of topic icons

Hey Max! Yeah, the icons can be a bit confusing at first. From what I understand, the blue ones are topics you've already read, while the red ones are unread. And the flaming hairstyle icon indicates a popular topic with a lot of posts. I think that's the basics of it

Re: Which Japanese Credit Card(s)?

I use the Rakuten credit card for online shopping and it's been reliable for me, though others have had mixed experiences. For travel, I prefer the ANA card through Sumitomo Mitsui Bank—great for earning miles and no annual fee.

Re: SIM/eSIM (Europe)

Is it better to buy a SIM in Europe or use a Japan-based service? I suspect the former is the best choice, but I would like input from those who travel to Europe. I came across an ad for Maya eSIM which looks good. I have never had an eSIM. Anyone tried it? https://maya.net/plans/europe Hey TJKansa...

Re: UK bank accounts

I'd leave your parents' address for now. And then, you can always use a virtual UK SIM card for confirmation, if you don't have a number.
Use the numbers from https://anonymsms.com/. They have UK numbers, and it's a free service.

Re: SMBC Olive: the curse of the middle name

Haha, I can totally relate to the middle name struggle, CluelessToshika! Thanks for sharing your experience with SMBC Olive. I'm glad you finally got your account set up, albeit with some hiccups along the way. I'm curious, did you end up using the romaji version of your name with the middle name ab...

Re: RRSP: cash-out and move it to Japan?

I have an RRSP back home in Canada. I am mid-40's. I recently had a chat with a financial person at my Canadian bank (it's been over 10-years since I had someone take a look at my RRSP investments) and, after the talk, he sort of recommended that I move my RRSP funds to Japan. This is because, sinc...

Re: starting a small garden on a balcony.

I want to start a small garden on a balcony. Does anybody have any good resources? (Japanese is fine) I would like something that is hard to kill. Good luck with your balcony garden! For low-maintenance plants, I'd recommend herbs like basil, mint, or cilantro. They're easy to care for and can thri...

Re: Good NYT article on/by/about retirees

Here's a nice (pre-print) article about retirement. I forget when it was, or the article that stimulated it, but at some point I wrote/submitted a brief story of my retirement here in Japan, and maybe the trajectory that led to it. They didn't use that, and I'm not even one of the brief quotes they...
