Re: UK Reinstate tax relief allowing mortgage interest to be set against rental income

Interesting that it isnt tax deductible. In Canada where I come from, mortgage interest is 100% tax deductible as it's treated as a business expense. Must be hard to cashflow rentals in the UK then.

Re: Buying investment apartment for tax deduction

Given that there is very likely no appreciation, the investment should cashflow really well before looking at it since that is the only certain source of return. And you'd want to compare that investment/loan against investing a similar amount in an index fund (tho likely you'd finance the rental wh...

Re: Building house with apartment(s) to generate second income?

Thx. Yes. I'm wondering what the zoning and tax implications are, and if it's common to have each unit metered and billed separately for energy and water consumption, to avoid the risk of paying high utility Bill's for tenants. I'm in Vanada and will retire in Japan and ideally work my last pre reti...

Building house with apartment(s) to generate second income?

Curious if anyone has built a new house, and added as part of the design, a small apartment or two into the design, as a way to generate some additional / side income? If so, how was the zoning and build process, and how has the rental experience been? I'm considering this in a larger metro area, wh...

Re: Moving to Japan Upon Retirement?

I'm from Switzerland and not from Canada, but I have also plans to move to Japan upon retirement. I posted about that a while ago: https://www.retirejapan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1232&p=10485 Canada's agreements with Japan on social security and taxes should all be publicly available ...

Re: Moving to Japan Upon Retirement?

I'm pretty much doing this right now except other than savings I have no other assets in the UK. I'm 51 and moved back here last year. My plan is to buy a house with savings (currently looking), pick up some part-time work (teaching English at unis 2.5 days a week from April), live off that and sav...

Re: New House Video

I love this house. Thanks for the video and tour.

BTW I also love the views from the living room, overlooking the city. Was this by design, the views? Also, was there a property on the site prior, or was it an empty lot?

Moving to Japan Upon Retirement?

Hi. My spouse is Japanes. I'm Canadian and live in Canada (spouse has always retained JP citizenship). I've lived in Japan previously, working at a multinational in Tokyo. I've also visited Japan about a dozen times (I'm mentioning all this to say that I'm reasonably familiar with Japan / life in Ja...

Re: New House Video

Super gorgeous house - I'm envious. I'm currently in Canada, having previously lived / worked in Japan. My spouse is JP. I'm hoping to return / retire in Japan. I believe based on the video, this is in Hiroshima. Was it an empty lot, or you purchased a lot with an old house, and removed it? Also may...
