Re: PR Application - Experience
I didn't see such a document, so if they indeed filled one out on my behalf, it could be fun to have a look at it. One document I did need to get is some kind of certificate from a Japanese person or someone already with a PR to state that I'm basically a good guy. (I pay my NHK fees; that's how go...

Re: Sock options
If you are in the Tokyo area then you can try Hikari shoes which specializes in larger shoe sizes. They also have a limited selection of large sized socks. The main store is in Kawasaki but they also have one in the Kanda area of Tokyo. I've never had a problem finding size 32 shoes and socks there....

Re: NISA General Questions | SBI
I think I've got it. The ex-dividend date for the Japan Tobacco 25 Mar Dividend was 28 December . You ordered your 100 NISA stocks on 4 Jan. This is after 28 December, so you should not be eligible for the 25 Mar dividend on those shares. My guess is you sold 100 shares from your taxable account to...

Re: NISA General Questions | SBI
Thanks for all the feedback. Here are some screen caps of the mentioned pages: What does your 口座管理 → 口座(円建) → 保有証券 screen look like? https://i.ibb.co/JvC2zPN/jt3.png https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOCD2023M0Q3A121C2000000/ Have a read of this. It does seem that even receiving dividends tax free ...

Re: NISA General Questions | SBI
Are you sure the 100 shares are actually in your New NISA account? Doesn't seem like it from the screenshot. Yeah, good question! I'm pretty sure I selected NISA when I bought it, and it shows up under the NISA section of my portfolio. The order history for this transaction appears to be NISA: http...

Re: NISA General Questions | SBI
I'm a little confused. I have 400 shares in Japan Tobacco distributed as follows in my SBI account: Shares (Cash / NISA Deposits (Growth Investment Quota)) / 株式(現物/NISA預り(成長投資枠)) Japan Tobacco 100 shares Shares (in kind/formerly NISA) / 株式(現物/旧NISA預り) Japan Tobacco 300 shares Today I checked my acco...

Re: Online bank security
... Shinsei scrapped the cards a couple of years ago... Hmm, I used that card (admittedly ancient) just the other day. And tho I get occasional suggestions to change my password, I haven't gotten any prodding to switch to an app. That's odd. I don't use the matrix card or an app. When I do a money ...

Re: Merry Xmas, Happy New Year
Here's looking forward to a happy and healthy year in 2024. I was just shopping for gifts at the local bookstore yesterday and came across this ranking of bestsellers by category. Note the number 1 and number 2 bestsellers in the "Business" category. Seems like a good omen for NISA and ID...

Re: Recommendations for news/magazine subscriptions?
The FT and The Times (UK) for me. Occasionally subscribe to the WSJ if they are having one of their $1 sales. All online only. Yes! I second the WSJ as a great bang for the buck. I signed up for the $2/month digital only subscription special offer and I read it daily. The articles are well written ...

Re: Changing temporary visa to work visa = possible. Just got off phone with immigration office.
There is also the backdoor approach using the Japanese Language School Student Visa loophole. Some of the larger Japanese language schools (e.g., ARC Academy, KAI, etc) have agreements with immigration that will allow a tourist visa to be converted to a Japanese Language School Student Visa in-count...
