Re: Employment post-65

I'm 65 and I'm tenured at a national university. I have two more months left of full-time employment there. There is no option for teaching after 65 at my university. Several years ago I put out feelers for working part-time at private universities for a few years (to avoid collecting my pension rig...

Re: When will you begin drawing your Japan state pension?

I'll be retiring in March 2022, but I plan to delay taking the pension until I'm 70 since I'll continue working part-time for a while. It's true that I might die and not get the full amount I could have if I had taken the pension at 65. But I doubt that I'll regret that if I'm dead. If I live to my ...

Re: Retirement Allowances (taishokukin 退職金)
An Australian friend who is sennin at a national uni told me he hasn't had a pay rise in years, and he doesn't expect one in the future. They are offering buyouts too.
This is true. I've had no pay raise for years. In fact, after the Great Tohoku Earthquake we even had pay cuts to ...

Re: Retirement Allowances (taishokukin 退職金)

Does anyone know of any get-around when it comes to American taxes and taishokukin? Has anyone (or have heard of someone who) avoided this at all? Is there a way to simply "not" delare the taishokukin? The only get-around I can see is to become a Japanese citizen and get free of the IRS.

... they effectively withhold a portion of your wages until retirement in order to enforce good behaviour and loyalty. Same goes for the "bonus" system. Ah yes, now it's time to talk about the legendary BONUS system. Now surely this is worth a new thread, but for now let me say that there...

"Taishokin" [retirement settlement] and American Taxes

Does anyone have experience/knowledge of how taishokin [retirement payout/settlement] is taxed for Americans? How is this tax calcuated? Is there any way of getting around this? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Question about delaying the pension

Hello, Thanks to everyone for the answers for my previous question regarding koseinenkin. My next question concerns the benefits of delaying the start of a pension. I have heard that if you delay the start until you are 70 you can receive about 40% more. Am I right in understanding that this only re...

Re: Kojin Nenkin (private individual pension)

Yes, my current insurance lady was suitably impressed when she brought the paperwork for me to fill out to collect. I think I got in at the tail end of the bubble economy years.

Re: Kojin Nenkin (private individual pension)

Many years ago--maybe around 25, I signed up for this type of savings--paying 6800 yen a month. It matures next year and I will get 600,000 yen a year for 10 years. I can delay the start of the payment if I want (which I will probably do, because I plan to continue working until I'm 70). In the end,...
