Re: japan's indebtedness
Like I said, the corporate and household balance sheets here are extremely strong. Post two of this very thread: It is very true that Japan as a whole is not overly indebted, as household and corporate balance sheets are in aggregate extremely healthy Hitachi and Fujitsu don’t hold any significant ...

Re: Yen keeps going from strength to strength!
Made me think twice about my usual liking for currency hedging my bond allocations… Would it perhaps make sense to buy unhedged now, and then re-buy them in hedged version when the Fed rates actually fall to normal levels later in the year or maybe even next year? Foreign exchange rates are notorio...

Re: japan's indebtedness
I took a look at that Fed balance sheet link again. It says Bank Reserves in the liabilities section. Wouldn't that include the money the BoJ paid for the ETFs to market makers/whomever and that went into their commercial bank accounts and then in those banks central bank reserves? That would balanc...

Re: japan's indebtedness
If I take out a hundred million yen loan from Mizuho and buy 100 million worth of Topix ETFs my net worth didn’t increase or decrease by a hundred million yen. Same for the BoJ and same for the Government of Japan. Except unlike the BoJ, you cannot print money without going to jail. When the BoJ bu...

Re: japan's indebtedness
That is a statement of a single years cash flow. This is not how defined benefit schemes funding status is determined. Whether or not they are fully funded is made by projecting out their income and expenses over the lifetime of the fund. So they make assumptions about investment returns, new premi...

Re: japan's indebtedness
I think Japan’s net debt/GDP is about 160% and the US is around 100% Will check later. As I remember Japan then Italy are the stand out counties with with high net debt to GDP. Even if the numbers were the same, US has higher growth rates and better demographics. They are both 119%. It was in the a...

Re: japan's indebtedness
It is very true that Japan as a whole is not overly indebted, as household and corporate balance sheets are in aggregate extremely healthy. The trouble is the Japanese Government is very indebted, and everyone knows it. It’s one thing reason I keep most of my funds outside Japan. Long term, that we...

Thanks, I just noticed this comment. The email notifications never work.
Yes, I think the long-term trend of the yen versus the dollar will be downwards but there could be long stints of yen strength. I recently increased my Japan weighting beyond the one in the MSCI ACWI for this reason.

How could climate change impact my expected portfolio returns? https://www.allianzgi.com/en/insights/outlook-and-commentary/the-big-question-climate-and-returns Interesting article, thanks. When it comes to inflation I am worried about: government debt/profligacy, climate change, and supply shocks ...
