I have property income in the UK for which I pay tax on the rental income. I'm UK rather than US but in a similar position to the original poster. My feeling is of being double taxed in countries in which I do not have the right to vote. Double taxation without representation. Didn't someone go to war for that reason? Here's my situation. I'm retired on a modest university...

The rule of thumb is last language in, first language out. That probably means for most of us who live in Japan, where Japanese will be the last language learnt, that Japanese will be the first language to be lost in case of dementia or mental ill health.
