Re: Delaying pension
Bravo and thankyou all. Sorry for not having known that one isn't allowed to contribute any more after turning 65. So putting in what I can until then, then just letting it sit for 5 years but grow in value by 42% seems a rather good deal. As I said - staggeringly basic stuff!

Re: Delaying pension
Thankyou Moneymatters. Yes, those sums certainly add up. I think perhaps my question wasn't well worded, so here's another way of putting it: Would one get 142 from age 70 by deferring, merely waiting (while living off other means) those 5 years from retirement at 65, but not contributing a single y...

Re: Delaying pension
After all these erudite posts, a staggeringly basic question, with apologies! Do the figures regarding the state pension being worth 125% and 142% more if one accesses it at ages 68 and 70, respectively, assume that one continues to pay in a monthly contribution from age 60 to 68 or 70? Contribution...

Was the non-transient oldies (but goldies) support group established in some form, and if so how do we join it?

Thankyou. Not any more. Yesterday I did, however, find other expenses to deduct, and the result was a completely different assessment. (I've described what happened in more detail in the "Help with taxes" thread. Mind you, it's never over til it's over, so I will wait and see whether someo...

Re: Help with taxes
Thanks very much TokyoWart. Sorry to hear you suffer this sort of thing as a US expat. Shamefully ignorant of tax matters though I am, I think you're correct, because they told me twice that the amount of tax paid to Australia was only a very small percentage of my overall liability, so the 控除限度額 ha...

Thanks. The purchase was made during May-June 2021 (settlement in June). Too late for any 'depreciation' deductions, as I understand. After learning that I have 3 years to seek redress for overpayment, I'm going to pay up this week, unless they'll allow a recalculation on the basis of certain expens...

Re: Help with taxes
Many thanks to you, Tkydon. It's quite a relief to know I can re-visit the matter and perhaps stand a chance of proving to them that the taxes they're asking for represent over-payment. I'd be very interested to read those other notes you started, should you be willing to share them one way or anoth...

Re: Help with taxes
[ Ben, this is a bit opportunistic of me, but I'm worried that the post I made in that 18-month old 'Australians' thread earlier today may not be viewed any time soon, but I need 'Help' - or at least feedback - very soon so that I can get the JTO to revise my return before 14/4, the absolute deadlin...

Tokyo and others on this now rather old thread: ' Sort of. If you have paid Oz income tax on the property, then it’s unlikely your Japanese national tax will change, if at all since you are eligible for tax credits. What will change, however, is your prefectural and city taxes since they regard thes...
