Re: Son at Japanese uni graduating later than 4yrs

It matters more to 'traditional/conservative' Japanese people, in general, than to non-Japanese or more globally-minded locals. So it depends somewhat on his plans are after graduating. If he wants to get into Itochu or Marubeni or somewhere else really popular and competitive, it may be an issue. F...

Re: Business bank recommendation

We get a call every time we're receiving a payment from abroad and have to confirm why we are getting paid and the we want the money. Ridiculous, but just a formality really. Mizuho used to do this for our company as well. After a while, they must have got bored of it because they stopped. I think ...

Re: Business bank recommendation

We used Mizuho for a small KK.
It wasn't great. Quite old-school.
Had to pay around 3,000 yen a month for access to the online banking, which was all in Japanese and looked like it was built in the '90s...

Have you tried the Net banks? SBI or AU Jibun are well known and active in giving out mortgages.
Aeon Bank too. Not quite an online bank, but similar.

Re: Strategy for the 2025 NISA

Wow! It’s been a rough couple of days on the markets. Things not looking too good so far, with pretty much all gains on the US markets since last December wiped out in the past few weeks. If this is long-term investing, looking at ups and downs from 2 or 3 months ago is basically pointless. Ignore ...

I was enquiring about transferring money directly from a Canadian bank to IBKR and then investing in eMaxis (index fund). It is possible to do this but not in Canadian currency.
Hope this helps.
Does IBKR have the eMaxis funds now? Previously they only had the (similar but not the same) ETFs.

Re: education fees j gov subsidy uni

Studying abroad temporarily for a term or a year? Or fully enrolled at an overseas university? I think the answer is that yes it applies in the first case but no it doesn't in the second. The application for the 'rebate' has to be done via the university in Japan. Details on this new program are sti...

Re: Still not sold on the UK state pension

Yeah, it does seem a bit arbitrary, but on paper I think I have a decent chance of qualifying for Class 2. Fingers crossed. Good luck. I felt like I had won the jackpot when I got the Class 2 letter and the amount I could backpay to get 15 years worth of contributions. Full UK pension and a partial...
