Re: Offshore vs Onshore Investment

Just wanted to give my take on what this actually means: •it's tax-deferred It depends on the country but in general money coming out of an insurance product (that "insurance wrapper" that was mentioned earlier) is taxed to you as income at the higher tax rates applicable to ordinary inco...

Thank you Ben for creating this site and community. It is extremely helpful.

Re: New Emaxis Neo funds

As Kanto says, they are a bit of a gamble. I decided to put a small amount of my NISA allocation into the Virtual Reality one. See how it goes for a couple of years. If it is no good I can sell it, and the amount will not sting too badly.

Re: ideco newbie question

This is Rakuten's list of funds available in iDeCo

https://dc.rakuten-sec.co.jp/service/product/

Other brokers will also have their similar lists. 'Non-risky', so no individual stocks allowed.

Re: Saving for College - What is the Best Approach?

Btw since we are also talking about college funds. Have we mostly locked it away, until the kids need it, or have you chosen funds that are accessible just in case mum and dad need it for emergency funds. Eg Medical, unemployment, or even in today’s environment Covid 19 lock downs. I’ve tried to ke...

Re: Dependent Spouse System

Related question (not sure if it warrants a new thread). What are the best savings / investment strategies for non-working spouses? My understanding is: 1) NISA is a good idea, whether working or not. 2) iDeCo, maybe not so much. No tax reduction benefit and also somewhat inflexible with products wh...

Re: Rakuten Sec - order processed 5 days later

It was a very good question. I was also confused by the timing and this slightly slow order processing.

Re: nisa lumpsum or tsumitate nisa

The big problem with the regular NISA is what to do if you plan on continuing to invest long term. Once you hit 5 years, you can rollover. Each rollover uses up that year's NISA allowance so any new investments must go into a taxable account. True, but in principle the same thing happens with Tsumi...

Re: Business Bank Account

Hm, ¥3,000/month… Sure if your business is large enough and it adds panache. I guess I'm still a Japan Gaijin newbie who's not used to paying for banking services, let alone for holding an account. If I may, do you have a debit or credit card with them? Can you download monthly statements in PDF fo...
