Re: Confusion about PMAC (Shigaku Kyosai) and DC
I am enrolled in PMAC and also have an Ideco account with SBI, paying the 12,000 yen per month automatically. I have set-up the payments to be paid through my bank account, so post-tax, but I get reimbursed during the annual tax adjustment through my organization. It was pretty simple to set-up, I h...

Re: Remittance of refunded (foreign) fine: Taxable?
Thank you Ben,
I thought so too, so I guess if the tax office comes asking I will just show them the refund decision, should be OK!

Remittance of refunded (foreign) fine: Taxable?
I recently got a refund of a previously paid fine in my home country as it has been retro-actively canceled this year. I transferred some of this money to my Japanese bank through Wise. I am not sure if I need to report it as an income and pay tax on it, it is not money I earned due to services, sal...

Re: PMAC? (Private and Mutual Aid Corporation for Private Schools in Japan)
You will be able to keep the medical insurance plan after you leave for upto two years, assuming you don't go to another employer with the same or different health insurance provider. After which time, you would have to switch to National Health Insurance - Kokumin Kenkou Hoken. As the premiums are...

Re: PMAC? (Private and Mutual Aid Corporation for Private Schools in Japan)
I am subscribed to their medical/death/disability term insurance plans. Though, I am not sure how long I will be employed in a private university, so I am considering to switch to other providers. Does anybody know if it is possible to keep this medical insurance plan after one leaves from PMAC? Not...

Special tax exemption for housing loan refund
Hi, We recently bought a house and we will be looking to do the application for the refund of 1% of the outstanding mortgage value. We received the outstanding balance statement from our bank already. In addition to this refund, we also annually submit receipts for life insurance etc.. My company ha...

Re: Housing Loan Rejected.. bank says it is due to low downpayment in application
It is also dependent on the property itself. If it is a new property, in my experience, it is easier to get the 100% mortgage loan. For older properties, the bank will need to assess it, and if the assessed value is lower than the mortgage amount you requested, you would have to put the difference a...

Re: Dehumidifiers
Been running the above recommended Mitsubishi unit and it certainly is working. Think the house is too large for one unit though. The analogue hygrometer I have seems to be about 10% out. Once I got the dehumidifier running it was saying 68% humidity vs the hygrometer's 60%. Explains the mold growt...

Re: Properties with Setback
Thank you Moneymatters, very helpful information. From what I understood, a private road burden can be had in a road, or part of, that is frequently accessible by many other people, and not necessarily by the few house occupants in a cul de sac only. For example, the public part of the road is 3 met...

Properties with Setback
We have been looking at some properties, and quite a few have a clause saying "setback XYZm" (セットバック). I was originally very unfamiliar with this term so I did not pay attention to it, but it turns out it may be a substantial issue in getting a house/land. They are also slightly cheaper (1...
