Thanks for the replies. You're probably right about not taking any risks this year by cutting it so close.
Thanks again.

Re: Furusato Nozei One Stop Exception
Thanks Adamu, I don't submit any paperwork to the ward office myself. I submit paperwork to my company labeled "Tax Adjustment Forms." So I think your initial assessment was correct. (I mistakenly assumed my company was filing tax returns on my behalf, but it seems like they are doing some...

Re: Furusato Nozei One Stop Exception
I don't know if this is relevant, but I used furusato-tax.jp's calculator and plugged in the numbers from my withholding form. I assume the number I was given is accurate?

Furusato Nozei One Stop Exception
Hello, I don't have any experience with the hometown tax deduction.* My understanding is that if my company files my taxes (which it does) and I'm only contributing to one or two municipalities, I'd be better off using the "one stop exception" system. Does anyone have any experience with t...

Not really a book but a booklet, you can download William J. Bernstein's "If You Can" for free here: http://efficientfrontier.com/ef/0adhoc/2books.htm
I also enjoyed John C. Bogle's The Little Book of Common Sense Investing.

Re: iDeCo for Americans and the FBAR
1. My wife is a Japanese national who doesn't work/pay income tax. I file with the IRS as "head of household"; she doesn't have any involvement with US tax filing. My understanding is that she can contribute 23,000 yen/mo (presumably from my earnings). She'll be 60 in 10 years, and we hav...

I hope it's OK for me to piggyback off of this thread with questions related to the same topic (i.e. Americans and iDeCo). 1. My wife is a Japanese national who doesn't work/pay income tax. I file with the IRS as "head of household"; she doesn't have any involvement with US tax filing. My ...

UTMA/UGMA for US/Japan Dual Citizen Children
Does anyone have any experience with UTMA/UGMA for children who have dual citizenship? Japan requires dual citizens to renounce one of their citizenships when they reach adulthood. I'm wondering if I open an account for a child who is currently a dual citizen, if they later give up their citizenship...

Re: Resources about starting your business in Japan
Are there any books or online resources that people would recommend on this topic?
I went to my city's international center library. I found only two decades old books which were geared toward foreign companies trying to enter the Japanese market, which is not really what I wanted.
