Re: Naturalizing for Taxes
I just relinquished US citizenship for Japanese and it is a bit time consuming but very doable. The good thing about Japan is that real estate does not increase in value, so your chance of being considered a covered expatriate is much lower than in other countries (if you have over 2 million dollar...

Re: Naturalizing for Taxes
Has anyone here given up their US citizenship solely on the merits of taxes? Were there any surprises? Or regrets (not just financially)? What happens to US accounts when a citizen gives up citizenship? For example, a 401k account or a taxable brokerage account, will the financial institution force...

Re: Naturalizing for Taxes
Great question, hope we get some answers. You might also check out the Turning Japanese website, they have lots of case studies: https://www.turning-japanese.info/ Thanks, I've looked into some of the information there. I'm curious to see if there are normal/average people who so this. I'm no Donal...

Naturalizing for Taxes
I'm American, getting close to 40, and have a reasonable income (around JPY 40m) in Japan. I am anxious about taxes and the US and Japan not recognizing various tax-advantaged vehicles (IRAs, NISA, etc.). I've always told myself that it's good to have a US passport "just in case" something...

Re: SMBC to end cheap transfers to domestic non-resident accounts (国内非居住者円建送金)
Is SMBC the cheapest way to send money overseas? I've been using Transferwise, but JPY 800 sounds favorable, depending on the transfer rate...

Term Life Insurance
Hi Everyone, 1. What should I be searching for to find term life insurance in Japan? I was searching for "定期保険" but only found plans for JPY 10M. (https://hoken.kakaku.com/insurance/gla/tk/ranking/) I'm looking for something closer to JPY 50 (maybe up to 100M) for 10 or 20 years. 2. Does a...

Re: Advice for an American with Japanese Family
Hi Tony,
Interesting point about the gifting limit. I'll need to figure that out if that's applicable.
Thanks,
Cooper

Re: Is this normal?
Thanks for sharing this. I'm curious/fascinated about normal Japanese families' expenses. 10% of my take home pay for allowance was surprising. If her husband is paying for clothes, lunch and the like with that money, maybe it makes sense. 10 man for insurance though -- wow. The penalties for breaki...
