Re: IBKR- Margin vs Cash accounts
I'll answer myself, in case someone will be interested in the future. I asked directly on the IBKR support chat. Basically, when having a margin account it's always advised to convert some of your base currency to cover the trade position you have in order to not pay any margin interest . Also to be...

Re: Transfering money from Japan to Interactive Brokers LLC
I finally was able to open the Remittance account, after I received my MyNumber Card. It took less than a week since I made the application. I am now able to transfer quite easily from HSBC to IBKR and the fee is still 800 JPY.

IBKR- Margin vs Cash accounts
Hello all, I just opened an account with IBKR Japan because I wanted to have exposure to some ETF not available in traditional Japanese brokers. My question to you today is: should I keep the margin account I have right now or should I switch it to a cash account? I am not interested in trading in a...

For SMBC, under this link under the lower part is a Japanese Explanation with Screenshots. Maybe that will help? https://kabu-yutai.com/2019/07/29/post-8845/ If I get it right - Go under 外国送金 - Under 送金先口座の事前登録 / 新規登録依頼 register the IB account (see screenshots) - Under 外国送金の依頼 / 事前登録口座への送金依頼 select...

Re: Offshore vs Onshore Investment
This is to conclude my experience with the second advisor: the name is Tyton Capital, he basically offered the exact same portfolio (Evolution) as described above. And it took 3 meetings to get there, such a waste of time. Regarding the first advisor, these are the answers to the last 2 questions I ...

Re: Transfering money from Japan to Interactive Brokers LLC
Hello, I wanted to post my experience using Sony Bank. I'll be quick: Sony Bank does not allow international transfers (which are required if you have to transfer to a 10 digits account number) in JPY. To be able to use an international transfer one has to specify a currency that is different from J...

Re: Offshore vs Onshore Investment
I am planning to go with eMAXIS Slim whole world (either this or this depending on whether I want to include Japan or not) with iDeco and possibly NISA (if available). But for my main portfolio I think I will stick with IB. I have heard before about US withholding 40% when you die. From this article...

Re: Offshore vs Onshore Investment
I think I understand that this kind of investment would fall under "dividend income", and would be taxable at 20,42%. Too bad... It's only taxable if you have a taxable event, for example: receiving a dividend, or selling and making a capital gain. If you just buy and hold there is no tax...

Re: Offshore vs Onshore Investment
Unfortunately my understanding of this is that, as of 2017, it is not correct. Foreign earned income may be exempt from Japanese taxes for the first five years of residency (depending on how it is earned and whether it is remitted to Japan), but investment income is deemed to occur where the indivi...

Re: Offshore vs Onshore Investment
Thank you all for the comments. I am asking some questions just so I can report the answer here, but I am not going for this portfolio. To open an iDeco account it seems I need the physical MyNumber card (every broker I tried requested to scan it...), which I haven't received yet, so I'll have to wa...
