Stock order hidden fees?
I opened a Rakuten Securities account, with the intent of buying US stocks and ETFs. I thought that there would be a commission fee on the buy/sell orders, as well as currency conversion fees. However, at https://member.rakuten-sec.co.jp/ITS/qaUsOrd0005.html I found these formulas: ・買い注文:(株価×株数+手数料)...

Foreign stocks and money exchange
Hello, I have a question regarding money conversions. Specifically, with a Rakuten Securities account. I'm planning to invest in a set of stocks and ETFs, and to do so I need to convert JPY to USD. I am quite confused on how the system works. Here are a few questions: 1) When does the conversion occ...

Re: Comparing USD ETF with equivalent JPY Fund
You don't need to account for it because the returns are quoted after the expense ratio. The US government taxes dividends on US stocks held by foreign investors. Thank you, you pretty much solved all my doubts. It's not an easy world to navigate in at first :) One more question: are there any fund...

Re: Comparing USD ETF with equivalent JPY Fund
How exactly are you getting the yearly returns? Are you calculating them yourself or taking them from a website? I got them online, but indeed I'm not so convinced about the validity, it seems better to calculate them how you did. However, I've got a few doubts with your process. Dividends over the...

Comparing USD ETF with equivalent JPY Fund
I have recently opened an account with Rakuten securities, and I'm trying to understand whether it is better to invest in Japanese funds, or in foreign ETFs. Or, more in general, how to compare the two types of product. I'm not an economist so I might be making mistakes in the following calculations...

Re: Rakuten / SBI differences
You can receive USD and keep them in USD on SBI Net Bank (I did that). As adamu mentions, you need to setup the USD account at SBI Net Bank beforehand (easiest is for example converting 100 JPY into USD within the bank-interface). If you don't have the USD account setup beforehand, it converts auto...

Re: Rakuten / SBI differences
I was wondering about one more thing. I have USDs in my previous US based online broker. I wanted to transfer them to Rakuten/SBI once I have an account. Is it possible to send the money as USDs without Rakuten/SBI automatically converting them into JPY? Since I plan to invest in USD, this would cau...

Re: Rakuten / SBI differences
Quick look at Rakuten shows they also charge 0.25 yen per dollar: https://www.rakuten-sec.co.jp/web/currency/forex/commission.html I did found that same page you linked, and honestly it made me confused. The one I did find earlier is: https://www.rakuten-sec.co.jp/web/commission/ There's a table cl...

Re: Rakuten / SBI differences
Can't speak for Rakuten, but SBI's currency exchange fees are very high. Thank you for the information, that is definitely an important one to consider. It seems that if I open the Rakuten FX account, all transactions have no fee at all, they just apply the currency spread. For USD to JPY it is set...

Rakuten / SBI differences
I've been planning to start investing some money in Japan, and I've been recommended to go with either SBI or Rakuten (or eventually Monex). In most threads I've seen, people say that Rakuten and SBI are basically the same, but I wanted to understand in what ways they actually differ before making a...
