Re: What's wrong with this portfolio?
Firstly, Happy New Year everyone. Secondly, sorry, I hadn't noticed there had been more replies to my question. Thank you to those people. So in general most would agree there is little risk (as in no more than any other stock market investing) in buying these funds? Like I said I don't see why ther...

Re: What's wrong with this portfolio?
Thanks for the replies guys. So you wouldn't see anything that would make alarm bells ring concerning the fund itself either. Like you said Ben, you have to look at the FAs motivation, which as I mentioned would be getting a commission fee for business referral. My family had known him for probably ...

What's wrong with this portfolio?
Hi guys, I asked a financial adviser what he thought of buying these kind of funds, https://www.hl.co.uk/funds/fund-discounts,-prices--and--factsheets/search-results/v/vanguard-ftse-uk-equity-income-index-income?clickid=yUgwB5U3IxyJUdYwUx0Mo3EzUknwliX1nRWYRk0&iradid=82616&theSource=AFSKI&...

Re: Investment income returns.
Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I'm still confused as to why continually taking 5% out of your portfolio would not deplete the investment, continually shrinking as it would be? It's not intuitive because most withdrawal rates are based on setting the dollar amount at the start, then adjusting for infl...

Re: Investment income returns.
Back to the original question though, say you had ¥50 million invested in the stock market, do you think you could reasonably easily take out 3% a year on top of inflation and be reasonably confident it would stay at ¥50 million (adjusted for inflation) pretty much for ever? Forever is a long time ...

Re: Investment income returns.
Thanks for the replies, TokyoWort and retirejapan. TokyoWort, you think 3% is a conservative return rate even above inflation, is that right? And maybe especially easy to achieve in Japan? retirejapan, could you explain a bit more why a 4-5% withdrawal rate would by definition mean you wouldn't run...

Re: Investment income returns.
Right, I would agree with you from what I know myself. I'm curious, because as I touched on in another thread last year, following the general rule (which is explained well here although by no means the only place you could read about it http://www.interest.com/savings/news/see-how-well-prepared-ret...

Investment income returns.
Hello everyone, I'm curious what everyone would estimate the returns they would expect to generate given a certain level of investment to be. Basically, say you had, ¥10 milion - ¥50 million - ¥100 million - now, and needed them to generate an income, say if you were retired, how much would you esti...
