Re: Open Discussion - The Bear Market
Staying the course, in the belief that current economic and financial-market conditions won't last longer than about a year. I've been adding J-REITs due to Japan's low interest rates and that the underlying assets are priced in the relatively cheap yen. Asset managers overseas apparently like Japan...

Re: are all nisa stocks active mutual funds?
My NISA is with MUFG. No, not all are active. In fact, all my holdings are index funds through eMaxis and eMaxis Slim. The most popular emaxis products are available: SP500 and All Country. I also have a Dow, US Reit and J-Reit, Developed Country Bonds, Developing Country Bonds. That's enough for me...

News on age extension to 65
I received good news yesterday when I phoned the IDeco support center about the legal change, in effect from May, to extend the age limit from 60 to 65 for making contributions. The woman, at the bank that handles my Ideco account, assured me that I will be able to resume my contributions from May, ...

Re: New iDeCo law from May 2022 and question
Not sure about that. I turned 60 earlier this year, after which my IDECO contributions stopped. I plan to inquire if I can continue from May, when the new age 65 rule comes into effect. I was able to do something similar with Nenkin: I "voluntarily joined" (任意加入) the system a couple of mon...

Re: Passive ETF Investing
you can do that rather easily within IB (you basically buy USD with your JPY) Have you checked the rate? My Canadian online brokerage does that as well, but the problem is that the rate is a bit of a ripoff. I get a better rate when I go through the hassle of phoning their forex desk and placing an...

Re: Is it crazy to buy bonds (ETFs) right now?
Thanks very much for your responses. Yeah, I'll stick with the allocation target. Tokyowart, I like your option #1 best of all. It fits with my "Couch Potato" investment plan and so I'll be adding a certain ETF whose bonds are 1-5 years to my portfolio and hope for the best. So far, my bon...

Is it crazy to buy bonds (ETFs) right now?
That’s what the talking heads on CNBC and Bloomberg are saying. But I need to rebalance my portfolio allocation of 60% stocks, 10% REITS and 30% bonds (all ETFs). I retire in 5 years. Obviously the first two are currently way overweight and bonds way underweight. The problem is the inflation predict...

Re: Modification of the Inheritance Tax for Foreigners / Likelihood?
To be clear, I believe this applies for when foreigners die in Japan, not when they receive inheritance proceeds from the estate of deceased parents or other relatives abroad. In the latter case, you are still required to report that and pay taxes on it if it meets a certain threshold, I believe. No...

Re: Pension questions
the cumulative excess of cash taken in from the payments withheld from our paychecks minus payments to retirees If that's true, that is very good news, since the fund's size has been steadily growing over the years. So much for the argument that Japan's state pension system is "under strain&qu...
