>>japan-based/localized flavor,
I guess most of us use this. The US one would be for Americans.

Overseas Assets - Interactive Brokers
On the subject of requirements to report overseas assets... Any opinions on whether Interactive Brokers (IB) is domestic or overseas? They have a real office and telephone num in Japan, so that looks like domestic, but as noted elsewhere, transfers to/from IB are treated as overseas by Japanese banks.

Re: Cash out from fund and invest in NISA?
I've been in several Banner funds over the years. A few of them did OK (so I didnt mind paying the high fees), but a few did badly. This Australian (Ebisu) fund seems to be doing OK but it is riskly. A friend here invested in a similar fund ("LM" I think it was called) over 10 years ago - ...

Re: Prestia Gold
I have Euros (as well as some USD and AUD) in my Prestia multimoney account.
I found the Prestia Gold card great when I travelled to Europe recently. When I used it as debit card (and to withdraw cash from ATM), the Euros came directly from my Euro deposits, no hassles with currency changes.

Re: Using International Credit Card based on Country with stronger currency
If your inward remittance is above a certain amount (1 million yen, I have heard) the bank reports it to the tax office. If the remitted money is part of your income (salary, inheritance, cash windfall, a present from rich uncle, etc). you should declare it (assuming you are tax-resident), as taxabl...

Re: Japanese - Anti-Charity
Honest question: what is wrong with NHK? They got rid of that Abe fanboy director 籾井勝人 in 2017. They are so much better than the low-level crap on the private channels. They even aired reasonably objective history programs about the war in China in 1930s and Unit 731. I can't imagine any of the priv...

Re: Investing in CEFs, BDCs, MLPs in US
I use IB for buying CEFs. As stated above Japanese brokers are not allowed to sell CEFs, BDCs etc. (such funds are considered risky, due to leverage, volatility). If you are using a Japanese bank as source of funds for IB, check that they will allow you to transfer to IB (I think SMBC-Prestia will d...

Re: Japan Tax Reporting for Foreign Stocks
My opinions/experience (not professional advice): divs or capital gains in Japan (for me, that means Rakuten shoken) are taxed at source, nothing for me to do. My divs or gains from InteractiveBrokers and other funds overseas that I sell (i.e., that make a *real* gain or loss, not paper one) are all...

Mizuho also a hassle for transferring to IB: although their Yen account is in Citibank Otemachi, it is treated as a foreign account.
IB Japan have a helpful telephone service - they said SMBC Trust bank (Prestia) is OK for yen transfers within Japan.
