Re: Health insurance after stopping work - my research to date
I would do this in a heart beat but sadly my British same sex marriage won't work for me like that in Japan.

Re: Health insurance after stopping work - my research to date
It was my husband who thought about it - it would never have occured to me that I could stay in the same system and hasn't to any of my colleagues either.

Health insurance after stopping work - my research to date
Here goes..... when you leave employment and don't take another job: 1. If you are under 65 you still have to pay your national pension contributions - these are set at about ¥20,000 a month and paid through city hall. Of course, once you start getting the Japanese pension you stop paying into this ...

Re: Pension payments for foreigners
It sounds like he is talking about once you have PR you can take advantage of the 'karakikan' idea that they will add the time you were abroad to make up for your lack of time paying into the Japanese system, i.e. you usually need to pay in for 10 years to get anything. It won't increase your pensio...

I switched to them a few years ago BUT I'm not a heavy phone user on a usual weekday. I largely use my phone to listen to the BBC radio and podcasts. If I'm in Tokyo the service can SOMETIMES be very slow in congested areas but that might have improved recently as they were developing their network....

Re: British state pension- spouse inheritance
My research awhile ago came to the same conclusion. Under the new rules UK state pensions cannot be passed on upon death. The new system has greatly simplified and streamlined the old one and wouldn't impact people living in the UK as they would have NI contributions. But, for us overseas it is harsh.

UK State Teachers Pension Lump Sum
Next year I will receive a lump sum payment from the UK teachers pension scheme on my retirement age of 60.
In the UK this is tax free for everyone receiving it.
Will I pay tax on this in Japan if it is paid into my Japanese bank account?

Re: How did the J Taxi industry manage to swallow UBER?
That is not the experience of myself or my friends in Tokyo. They would occasionally try Uber for a joke as it would take 5 times longer to arrive and be far more expensive than a usual Japanese cab.

Re: international transfers
I had a major investment of mine mature at the start of February and there was a lot of bureaucracy in getting the payment into my Mizuho account in Japan from the UK investment company (now called Utmost but when I started called Generali). Utmost wanted a lot of paper work which just took time but...
