Re: Cryptocurrencies
I don't think there's much specific to Japan to talk about Yes, you're right, the internet is full of general crypto chatter. This is a bit old but but but still worth a mention I think for anybody here in Japan already in crypto or thinking about it: "The Financial Services Agency is set to b...

Re: Caution - GMO Bank Aozora - Security Concerns
2factor code involved? This exactly. Although 2FA isn't 100% full proof, it's as close to foolproof as most of us can get. I wouldn't dream of using any kind of online banking or payment system or email that didn't offer it. Not sure how widely it is used in Japan, but in the UK at least I don't th...

Re: Accepting credit card payments
Is there a chance you might have made a cost comparison table during your research/investigation period? That would be an amazing resource. Flywire beat all others hands-down. I don't really feel comfortable publishing these rates online, not sure if they are commercially protected or not, however ...

Accepting credit card payments
For years we (kyushujourneys.com) have been using GMO as our credit card processor because they charge less than 2% transaction fee. However they want to increase our monthly fixed fee from ¥5,500 to ¥55,000!!! Can anybody recommend another local (Japanese) credit card processing company instead? I ...

Re: For Brits: it's time to vote
I have not requested a vote this time - mostly because I see almost no difference between the policies of Starmer’s Labour or Sunak’s Tories. On my ballot paper I had the options of socialist workers party, lib dems, greens, reform, and couple of other oddballs, in addition to the two main ones. At...

Re: iDeCo plus (employer contributions)
Interesting, first I'd heard of this. As the combined amount that can be invested (¥5k-¥23k) is the same, there doesn't seem to be much benefit to the employee - except maybe psychological because it feels like they're getting free money in addition to their salary. I don't think there's any differ...

Re: iDeCo plus (employer contributions)
Maximum combined amount contributed by employer and employee is 23,000, and it can be any combination for example 1,000 by employee and 22,000 by employer or vice versa.

iDeCo plus (employer contributions)
https://www.ideco-koushiki.jp/owner/ideco_plus.html I have been looking into this myself so thought I would share it here. It's the part of iDeCo whereby the employer can make contributions together with the employee (企業型確定拠出年金). The total amount of contribution is classed as a business expense. In ...
