Re: Automatic monthly investments through Rakuten

I tried everything I could online but the fact of the matter is that the system just doesn't allow for it. In the end, I had to phone them up, make sure I got through to an operator, explained the situation and asked them to force it on their end. Also, make sure to confirm the order in which your n...

Re: Cheap retirement living in rural Japan

Yeah, a nearby town about 20 minutes drive from where I currently live was basically giving a free house to new families. The condition was the family has to be in their 20's, married with a child/children, etc. Really wanted to take advantage of it, but didn't have a child at the time. Now that I d...

Re: Cash v Cashless.

When I lived in the UK I paid for almost everything by debit card. Going to the pub, I'd take out a £20 from the cash machine and limit myself to that (paying for each drink by card? You obviously have never worked behind a bar.) But yeah, I liked paying for everything by card because it was safer f...

Re: Personal Finance Hacks in Japan

Thanks for the clarification, the way I read it was like "claim it, regardless". Perhaps it would be written as "don't forget to claim these things if the expenses exceed 100,000, with proof" 😂

Re: Personal Finance Hacks in Japan

Just a question about the first "hack", about declaring life insurance, etc. in excess of 100,000 on the tax return. Are you sure that's legal? It sounds like tax fraud (claiming something which isn't true on your tax returns). I mean, I'm all for not paying as much in taxes if I don't hav...

Re: Best banks in Japan

Sorry to go round in circles, but that goes back to my original point that I've found several banks with APY of 0.2% (あおぞら銀行), far above the 0.0001% you used as an example, but much lower than foreign banks which have accounts above 1.5%, even a full 2%. Though I think I understand- Japan just doesn...

Re: Best banks in Japan

I must be misunderstanding you (very likely, I'm a financial moron) but by "interests on deposits" do you mean that in the sense of "you get interest on what you deposit per year" or "you get interest on your bank account balance, accrued". As in, A) If I deposit 100,00...

Re: Best banks in Japan

Do you really think most Japanese people would prefer a ‘banking app’ to the very useful ‘cashbook system’? As for ‘free ATMs’ I haven’t paid to withdraw money out of a Japanese ATM in 15 years. An app which can allow you to see your current balance, past transactions since you opened your account,...

Re: Best banks in Japan

Sorry if I sounded rude when I said "Japan is behind" in regards to interest rates. It's obviously something more complicated than I'm able to understand, I just thought it was the case as Japan (generally speaking) just seems to be catching up to the rest of the world for things such as o...

Re: Best banks in Japan

Yeah, I don't want to make anything difficult for myself. The whole point of opening these accounts is to make things as simple as possible. So it seems, I'm not looking in the wrong places, Japan just doesn't have any banks that have high-interest savings accounts then? That really sucks... Day and...
