Re: Implications of temporarily moving to the USA?
Hi Ben! The good news is that being transferred abroad by a Japanese company for a specific amount of time is something that banks are familiar with and are often willing to work with. You will need to check with your bank, but 1. keeping house and paying loan should be completely fine. If your bank...

Implications of temporarily moving to the USA?
Hi all, I may have the chance to temporarily move to the USA, and I'd like to know about the implications: My situation: - Permanent resident in Japan. 20+ years living here. Single. Don't have Japanese nationality (yet). - Own a house in Saitama, paid with a Flat35 loan. Still have 20+ years left t...
Re: Car tax
Your amounts sound too high compared to what I just paid for mine. I just paid 9,000 yen about a week ago. However, the car is new (I bought it last October) and is a very common and average Toyota hybrid. Is my tax this low because it's a hybrid, because I'm paying only for the few months I've had ...

Re: Japanese Income Tax Refund -- When?
I came to check here because I'm in the same situation. My accountant submitted the tax returns via e-Tax on March 15th, and I was expecting to receive it in mid-April like other years. We're almost in June and I haven't received anything yet.

Re: Jisedai Jutaku Points
Thanks, I was already able to contact them on the phone (took me three days!) and ask all the information I needed. Yes, as you correctly say I would have to use these points before September 30th. I was hoping to use them to buy some of the expensive items (fridge, washing machine...), but since my...

Jisedai Jutaku Points
Hi all, Last year I bought a piece of land in Saitama and after spending several months designing the house with the architects (it's a 注文住宅) construction started in March. Last week I received a letter from the 次世代住宅ポイント事務局, which I assume is a kind of government organization. If I understood corre...

Car owning expenses?
Hi all, I'm considering whether I can afford to buy a small car, but I'm completely clueless about the costs involved here in Japan. Besides the obvious (the cost of the car itself, gas, road tolls and parking), what other costs should I consider? I know that at the very least I will need to pay for...

Re: Question on house loan
Our bank (all banks?) also has protection built into the floating rate. It can't go up by more than 25% every five years, so it is much less risky than a true floating rate based on interest rates. This is very interesting. Let me confirm whether I understood this correctly. This is a screenshot fr...

Re: Reducing fixed expenses challenge
You may find it worth it to pay the penalty to cancel your current contract: I had 3-4 months left and I still saved money after paying the penalties :) Softbank charges 10.000 yen to cancel the contract if you cancel outside your "renewal month". I switched to AEON Mobile a few weeks ago...
