Take a step to the side and breathe

I took this photo in Surrey by taking a couple of steps off a rather busy road.

I think there might be some kind of metaphor there.

This week’s books

I am still on my Terry Pratchett binge! Bought all of his Discworld books on Kindle and am currently reading Feet of Clay (19/41).

I finished Gary Stevenson’s book The Trading Game. Really enjoyed it, he’s a good writer as well as being a fantastic communicator on YouTube. Seems parts of the book are a bit exaggerated, but it was a fun read (and the last bit being set in Tokyo was a nice surprise). Very much recommend.

  1. 4. I probably need to do some research into annuities available in Japan…please share what you find m(_ _)m

    1. They don’t really seem very attractive. Most 個人年金 products are limited term, and offer a low return. There are limited tax advantages and some diversification benefits but nothing that makes me want to get one…

      1. The only benefit to the ones available in Japan seems to be that they are completely hands-off. I have never seen an inflation-linked one here.
For your case Ben, what problem would you be trying to solve with an annuity?
With a UK and a Japanese pension, you have a base level of income covered already.
As you know, Rakuten and other brokers offer regular auto-sell options of funds as well. So it seems as though you could set up your iDeCo and NISA accounts to give you automatic ‘income’ each month, without needing an annuity.

        1. Just thinking about options really. Maybe diversification? Our pensions should be enough to live on, let alone drawing down our investment portfolio…
